IN LOVING MEMORY

Hendrica "Rikie" Maria Platel Den Ouden

Feb 01 1935 - Oct 25 2022

Hendrica Maria Platel-DenOuden, known as “Rikie” to friends and “Oma” to family, passed away on October 25th, 2022 in McKinney, Texas, at the age of 87. She was born in Haarlem, Netherlands, to Wilhelmus Petrus Platel and Cornelia Maria Lamers-Platel on February 1st, 1935.

Rikie was the third of six children. Rikie married her husband, Joost DenOuden, on August 30th, 1958. With the help of the Dutch government and Catholic Charities, they immigrated to the US by boat, which took approximately 2 weeks, and landed in New York City in February of 1959, not knowing in which state or city they would be residing. They settled in Belleville, Illinois, where their daughter, Maria, was born five months later. After eleven years in Illinois, the family picked up and moved to the small panhandle town of Dimmit, Texas, so Joost could pursue a better opportunity as a tool and die maker. Rikie set up a loving home while they welcomed new friends. From Dimmit they moved to Oklahoma City and then finally in 2005, they moved to McKinney so Rikie and Joost could be close to Maria, Jeff and their grandchildren.

Rikie was known for her love of drinking hot tea with cookies everyday. She enjoyed sharing her cookies and bringing treats for her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her love and support for her family was always felt and never wavered. Rikie enjoyed spending time with her family and watching the grandchildren and great grandchildren play around her. Though she was quiet, she really enjoyed getting to know everyone she crossed paths with. She had many life long friends and always welcomed the opportunity to entertain new friends. Rikie had a deep and enduring Catholic faith and enjoyed being a member of St. Jude’s.

Rikie is survived by her daughter, Maria, and son-in-law, Jeff Kay, of Fairview, Texas; grandchildren, Tony, Krista and grandson-in-law Cal, Joseph and granddaughter-in-law Kristany, Patrick Kay and Ciara Green; 3 great-grandchildren, Charlie, Michael and JJ, whom she adored.

She is survived by her sister Agatha van Rijn, brother Henk Platel, and sister-in-law, Annemieke Kersten.

Please join the Kay family at their home for a meal and fellowship following interment.
