Gyanendra “Gy” Gupta passed away at his home in Plano, Texas, on September 20, 2025, at the age of 77.
Hailing from Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh in central India, Gy was the youngest of six children born to Padmavati and Hemraj Gupta. He attended the prestigious Scindia School in Gwalior, India, and went on to earn undergraduate and master’s degrees in chemistry in Bhopal. In 1974, he moved to the United States, where he was admitted to UMass Lowell. There, he was mentored by the late Professor Rudolph Deanin, who encouraged him to enter the plastics engineering master’s program and guided him as he navigated both the university and life in America.
Deeply devoted to his alma mater, Gy remained a proud and generous supporter of UMass Lowell throughout his life. He made an estate gift of more than $1 million to support renovations to the plastics engineering building and to establish a scholarship for engineering students, with preference given to students of Indian heritage. In the fall of 2023, UMass Lowell honored his contributions by naming the second floor of Ball Hall in his name.
After graduating from UMass Lowell in 1978, Gy began his professional career, which took him to Columbia, South Carolina; Rochester, New York, where he worked for Bausch & Lomb; and Dallas, TX, where he worked for Texas Instruments, Raytheon, and DRS Infrared Technologies. In 1985, he married his now former wife Pratima. They lived and raised two children, Nehal and Krishan, in Plano, TX.
In 2001, Gy embarked on an entrepreneurial path and founded his own business, Maintain US of Texas, which provided regional and national facilities maintenance services for commercial clients. Though born in Bhopal, Gy was a proud Texan, who enjoyed going to the shooting range. He was also an avid gardener.
He is survived by his children, Nehal (of Brooklyn, NY) and Krishan Jay (of Austin, TX); his brother, Naren Gupta (Geeta Gupta) of Orlando, Florida; his sisters, Nirmala Jain (Subhash Chandra Jain) of New Delhi, India; Aruna Garg; and Asha Gupta of London,UK; and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, Padmavati and Hemraj Gupta, and his brother, Virendra Kumar.
