Gwendolyn May (Conover) Highsmith passed away on Wednesday, March 30, 2022 in Rockwall, Texas at the age of 96. She was born on May 26, 1925 in Long Branch, New Jersey to parents Arthur Grant Conover and Lela Frances (Combs) Conover.
Gwendolyn married James Highsmith on December 20, 1947 in Denton, Texas. They had two children, Catherine, and Scott. She received her master’s degree in Music at The University of North Texas in Denton, Texas, and during her time, she was in The Delta Kappa Gamma society. Later, she was employed at the Farmersville School District and remained there for over 30 years. Gwendolyn also became the Choir Director of First United Methodist Church in Farmersville and served her church for years.
She is survived by her two children, Catherine Menges of Rockwall, Texas and Scott Highsmith and his wife Kathy of McKinney, Texas, her grandchildren, Bonne Wasson and her husband Aaron, Natalie Lane and her husband Hayden, Michael Menges and his wife Jaime, and Kathryn Gabbert and her husband Jeff. Her great grandchildren include Lunden and Bowen Menges, Coen and Petra Lane, Dakota Wasson and Lucia, Lila and Levi Gabbert.
Gwendolyn is preceded in death by her parents, and loving husband Jim Highsmith who preceded her August 29, 2003.
A visitation will be held on Monday, April 4, 2022, at Hurst’s Fielder-Baker Funeral Home in Farmersville, Texas from 5-7:00PM. The funeral service will be Tuesday, April 5, 2022, at First United Methodist Church of Farmersville at 2:00PM. Burial will follow the service at I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Farmersville.
