Gloria Jean "Jeannie" Johnston

January 16, 1942 - September 10, 2021

Gloria Jean Johnston passed away on September 10, 2021 in McKinney, Texas at the age of 79. She was born on January 16, 1942 to Edward William, “E.W.” and Mertyce (Stallings) Francis in Houston, Texas. Jean married Clayton Gerald “Gerry” Johnston on August 28, 1965 at the First Baptist Church in South Houston, Texas. She graduated from South Houston High School in 1961 and received her bachelor’s degree in Education from the University of Houston - Clear Lake. She spent the summer of 1964 doing missionary work in New Orleans, which provided a future path for her and Gerry to adopt their children, Gerry, Jr. and Lori from Sellers Southern Baptist Adoption Agency.  Jean taught 4th grade in Pasadena ISD for 24 years. Her mission was to love and care for each and every one of her students equally.  Not only did she prepare them academically, but she also tended to their physical needs, often providing food and clothing for the ones in need.  She was lovingly known by her teacher friends as “Momma Jean”.  She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Allen, Texas. Her most cherished title, however, was “Mamaw” to her 3 grandsons, Clay, Canter, and Reagan.

Jean is survived by her husband, Gerry Johnston; daughter, Lori Blanscet and husband, Chad of McKinney, Texas; grandsons, Clay, Canter, and Reagan Blanscet; brother, Eddie Francis and wife, Janet of Channelview, Texas; brother-in-law, Ronnie Johnston and wife, Betty Jo of Shreveport, Louisiana; nieces and nephew; Lacy Hernandez, Tara Huckabay, and Travis Francis, and a host of other loving family and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Billy Wayne Francis, and her son, Clayton Gerald Johnston, Jr.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 15, 2021 at First Baptist Church, 201 East McDermott Drive, Allen, Texas 75002.  The family will receive friends during a visitation on Tuesday, September 14, 2021 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home, Allen, Texas.

An additional funeral service in the Houston area will also be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, September 17, 2021 at Forest Park East Funeral Home, 21620 Gulf Freeway, Webster, Texas 77598.  Interment will follow at Forest Park East Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Chad Blanscet, Clay Blanscet, Canter Blanscet, Reagan Blanscet, Travis Francis, Todd Moore, and Bill McCambridge.

My memories of Gerry and Jean go back when Gerry played golf with our group. I remember Jean primarily from Facebook and a group who liked music and she participated in the group I would sing for. It was mostly older songs and ones that almost everyone in our age category remember. She would always had feed back to every song. This is such a sad ending for a very nice lady. I put her in Gods hands to get her through her infirmity so I guess he has better plans for her than our preferences. We will miss her. Paul and Alietta.Springfield, September 15, 2021 Growing up, I heard my Mother (Dianne Harvey) talk about Jeannie (and her Family) all the time! She was one of my Mother's best friends. I love looking at all the old pics of her and my Mother. My Mom had told me how strict their Mothers were and some funny stories about that! I loved the fact that Jeannie was on Facebook (my Mother never took to social media - or computers in general) so I would always give my Mom a hard time telling her if Jeannie can do Facebook - so can you...lol I will certainly miss seeing her posts about what a beautiful day it is in McKinney, TX and all the cute posts of her and Gerry and the Grandsons. She was one cool Lady and really kept up with the times. My heart breaks for all of you. She sure loved her Family and those Grandsons....oh my! Takes the word LOVE to an entire new level. I am so glad she and Mom got to talk several times before Mom passed last November. Though Jeannie was unable to make it to Mom's funeral (early days of COVID back then) she wrote a sweet message that the Preacher shared during the service. She also sent cards while Mom was in the Hospital - many cards! Jeannie was a blessing! I know She and Mom are in Heaven just laughing and talking about hair and Family right now! Mom is probably complaining about me if I had to guess! HAHA! God bless your Family and wrap his arms around all of you. Jeannie was one of a kind and will be missed!! Kim Mitchell Kim Mtichell, September 15, 2021 Jean was many things to so many people. I met her when I started my teaching career at Mae Smythe. She in 4th w a terrific team of teachers, me in Kindergarten. We were fortunate to be part of a campus that treated everyone like family- which is what Jean personified. She loved teaching, she loved the students and families, and she was an integral part of the Mae Smythe faculty. I respected her vast knowledge and appreciated her guidance and wit. When she retired, FB kept us in touch. She will be greatly missed by so many. My deepest sympathy to Gerry, Lori, and the boys. You were the most important people in her life, and I enjoyed her photos and stories of all of your activities. Rest easy my friend. Your mom was so loving and encouraging to your family, of course, but also to your friends. She was your cheerleader and I know there is a huge hole in your heart at this time. I am praying for God to cover you and your family in his comfort and love as you grieve for her. So much love coming your way.

My heartfelt condolences, Sharon Tatum Sharon Tatum, September 12, 2021 Jeannie and I met when we were in the 4th grade at South Houston Elementary. Even though we didn’t see each other regularly after we both were married, she was still a special friend. I taught with her for two years in the late 1970s. Not only was Jeannie a great person, she was an exceptional teacher. I am very sorry for your great loss and I will miss my friend greatly. May God watch over you, Gerry and Lori, and family. She loved all of you so very much. She loved being a wife, mother, and Mamaw. Jeannie will be given a special place in heaven, and one day, you will be with her again. Judy Geissen Judy Geissen, September 12, 2021 I am sorry that both Jean and you contracted Covid. I know that she was the love of your life and that you will miss her so very much. I cannot imagine how hard it will be for you in the coming days ahead. I know that you are thankful that she had accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior. This means that someday you will be reunited and spend eternity with together. This is something you can hold on to when you have those times that are the harder to deal with than others. Rest assured, we will also be praying that God will give you comfort when you need it most. I’m also thankful that you have Lori and the boys to keep you company and keep you busy. Having someone to lean on and someone to help occupy your time will be more of a blessing than you can imagine at this point in your journey. Bill (W.O.)
