George W. Nunn, Jr.

George Nunn, Jr. was born in Waxahachie, Texas on March 24, 1931 to the parentage of George and Phillipine Nunn.  He was approximately eight years old when his family moved to Dallas.  He attended N. W Harlee Elementary School, Lincoln High School, Prairie View A&M University, and Bishop College.

He served as a staff sergeant in the United States Army and received his honorary discharge in 1954.

George married Juanita Davis and to this union two children were born; Perry Alan and Angela Joi.

He was a member of Cedar Crest Church of Christ where he was an usher and served on many committees.

Later in life in June, 1985, George married Irene Menter Hammond. They were happily married for thirty-two years.

George joined the True Lee Missionary Baptist Church on April 28, 1985. He was a member of the Usher Board, a Sunday school student and a member of the Deacon Board where he served as treasurer. George cooked lunch for different church events and did whatever needed to be done around the church in the service of God’s Kingdom.

He worked at the University of Texas Health Science Center (now UT Southwestern Medical Center) for thirty years as a research assistant. He worked in the Biochemistry Department in the late Dr. Ron Estabrook’s laboratory where he was part of a team performing enzyme studies. His primary responsibility was working with laboratory animals. He retired from UT Health Science Center in 1987.

George established his own pest control service and provided tax service until his health began to fail.

Those family members who preceded him in death were his parents, George Nunn, Sr. and Phillipine Nunn; his sisters, Arlette Nunn and Brunette Rivers; his brother, Maland Nunn and brother-in-law, Gilbert Lemelle.

George leaves to cherish his memories his loving wife, Irene; his darling daughter, Angela Joi Savage; his precious granddaughter, Angene’  Savage , all of Dallas; his sister, Zenobia Lemelle of Baytown, Texas, sisters-in-law, Helen Jones, Catherine Alton, and June Calloway, all of Dallas, and a host of other relatives and friends.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 26, 2017 at True Lee Missionary Baptist Church, 3907 R.L. Parish, Sr. Avenue, Dallas, Texas 75210.  The family will receive friends during a visitation on Friday evening beginning at 7:00 p.m. at the church.
