George W. Faris, Jr.

Integrity best describes the life of George W. Faris, Jr., a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. Born February 20, 1918 in Ft. Worth to Maude Ella Guthrie and George W. Faris, Sr. George was a member of the first graduating class of Paschal High School. As a star football player, George attended junior college in southern California on scholarship. He returned to Ft. Worth marrying Helen Gould, his wife of 67 years. After a successful career with Southwestern Bell spanning 44 years, George and Helen retired in Austin where they were long-time members of Austin Country Club. As an avid golfer, George won numerous tournaments and received several awards. Together George and Helen were very active couple enjoying bridge, golf, dancing and travel. They were also active members of University Christian Church. In 2001, George and Helen moved to McKinney to be closer to family. They joined El Dorado Country Club where George was a member of the Senior Men’s Golf Association playing with (and often beating) much younger members. They made their church home at First Christian Church in Garland. George went of be with the Lord on March 2, 2005 and is survived by his wife Helen; his daughter, Jo Brashear Brister; son-in-law, Ben Brister; brother, V.W. “Cotton” Faris; grandsons, Kevin, Kyle and Kelly Brashear his wife, Laurie and their son Grant. As well several nieces, nephews, and other loving relatives. Viewing will be Thursday, March 3 from 6-8 pm followed by a Memorial Celebration on Saturday, March 5 at 10:00 am in the Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Chapel in Allen. A private interment will be Friday, March 4 in Ft. Worth. Pallbearers will be Tom Kite Sr. and Dr. Lou Cannatti of Austin and Jim Staif, Bill Carlson, Dean Erickson, and Herb Yoehle of McKinney. Honorary pallbearers will be Dwayne Howard and the Senior Men’s Golf Association of El Dorado Country Club.
