IN LOVING MEMORY

George Earl Winters

Mar 13 1928 - Aug 21 2023

George Earl Winters went home to be with his Lord and Savior on August 21, 2023 at the age of 95. He was born on March 13, 1928 in Dallas, Texas to John Hamilton Winters and Marie Van Vaulkenberg Winters.

George has now been reunited with his wife of sixty years, Loretta Joyce Morris Winters, who he missed greatly since her passing in 2016. They were married in Lewisville, Texas on December 8, 1956. Together again, they are worshiping their Lord and Savior together in Heaven.

After attending one year at Texas Tech after high school, George enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Following two years of service, he worked as a milliner and women’s ready-to-wear salesman for department stores in Oklahoma City and St. Louis. Longing to come home and find his future wife, he returned to Dallas where he met his lovely wife, Joyce, and together they started a family. He continued a career in sales and eventually finished his degree at Southern Methodist University. In 1963, he relocated his family to Houston, where he started Dinosaur Plastics, a successful sign-making company.

While in Houston, his faith grew, and he and Joyce were active members at Willow Meadows Baptist Church and later First Baptist Church of Houston, where he served as a deacon. After long hours working in his business, he made hospital visitation and serving those within the congregation a regular part of his week.

When he retired and sold his business, George and Joyce moved to Denton, Texas in 2000 to be near family. In Denton, they developed a great life, and George once again served as a deacon at First Baptist Church of Denton. He regularly made hospital and nursing home visits, and once a week, he volunteered at the Denton State Supported Living Center (DSSLC) where he ministered to residents living with severe physical and mental disabilities.

George was a man who believed in setting goals and would often ask his adult children what their short and long-term goals were. He was also a great man of prayer, and he knew without a doubt that God’s presence in his life helped guide him through some of life’s most difficult moments, including the loss of his daughter. Inspired by the love of God, his life experiences, and his goals, he authored and published a book, He Prayed, in 2013 documenting how his relationship with God and prayer was his guide through life. While George was an accomplished man in the world’s eyes, those who knew him best know his Christian faith is truly what drove him to love, serve, and minister to those in his life.

George is survived by his son, David Winters and wife Lori of McKinney, Texas and a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Loretta Joyce Morris Winters; daughter Lorrie Hope Winters; parents, John and Marie Winters; and his siblings, Jack Winters and Helen Gratigny.

On Monday, August 28, a visitation will be held at 11:15 a.m. followed by a 12:00 p.m. funeral service, in celebration of his well-lived life, at the Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home in Allen, Texas. Following, family and friends are invited to join David and Lori for a meal in celebration of George (the location will be shared at the service, but please let David and Lori know if you plan to join them for lunch). A brief interment for all who want to attend, will take place on Tuesday, August 29 at 10:00 a.m. at the Bolivar Cemetery in Sanger, Texas.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Volunteer Services Council for the Denton State Supported Living Center (DSSLC). To learn more about the DSSLC or to donate, visit www.vscdenton.org.
