Faye E. Handlogten

Faye E. Handlogten passed away March 4, 2024 in McKinney, Texas at the age of 90. She was born to Albert and Francis Schut on January 27, 1934 in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Faye graduated from Grand Rapids Central Christian High School and went on to receive a B.A. degree from Grand Valley State College in 1969. She earned her Master’s degree in Special Education from East Texas State University. Faye worked for 30 years in special education teaching and administration in Dallas and Richardson. The majority of those 30 years were spent as Founder and Director of Highland Academy in Richardson.

Faye was the founder of the Association for Specialized Elementary School Accreditation, past President of the Dallas Branch International Dyslexia Association, and past President of the Academic Therapy Association. She had received certifications from Michigan State University, Texas State Elementary (K-8), Language Learning Disability; Academic Language Therapy, and Texas Certified Educational Diagnostician.

She was affiliated with the Dallas Branch International Dyslexia Association (former board member), Academic Language Therapy Association (former board member), Texas Educational Diagnostician’s Association, and the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development.

As an accomplished pianist she played for weddings, churches, etc. She also enjoyed boating on Lake Michigan, flying private planes (earned her pilots license), reading, and spending time with her family.

Faye was married to Clarence J. Handlogten for 65 years, and was the mother of two children, Gail and Lynda.

She is survived by her sister, Velma Nykamp, and daughters, Gail D. Isbill and Lynda K. Coch. Faye was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Francis Schut; brothers, Sydney, Albert and Alan Schut; sister, Gertrude Bassler; sister, Minnie Wright; and sister-in-law, Edna Schut.
