IN LOVING MEMORY

Evelyn "Evie" Pauline Sackett

Jul 07 1927 - Aug 09 2020

Evelyn “Evie” Pauline Sackett of Allen, Texas passed away on August 9, 2020 at the age of 93.  She was born on July 7, 1927 to Thomas Joseph Filion and Irene Stelite (Bouchard) Filion in Exeter, New Hampshire.  She attended Newmarket High School from 1940-1942 and St. Mary Academy from 1942-1943. After high school she attended Mt. St. Mary College from 1943-1944 and Boston University in Boston MA earning a BS in Business Administration in 1948.  Evelyn moved to New York, NY finding employment as a clerical typist at H. J. Gerdts Company.  She started her military service as Private in the USMC Reserves starting in September 1949 and achieved the rank of Sergeant.  Evelyn then transitioned to the USMC serving almost two years achieving the rank of Second Lieutenant June 1951.  She began active duty at Camp Le June, NC and ended up at Camp Pendleton, CA. Evelyn penned the following military details: “Reported to Pendleton Base for duty at Headquarter Battalion-Marine Barracks Administrator, at the Post Legal Headquarter Battalion assigned to Legal Attorneys Staff in charge of Legal-Clerical Personnel. Performed stenographic recording and transcription of all records of trial cases for the Post Legal Office. These records required examination for continuity and grammatical correctness. As part of my duties, I also served as an Officer of the Court, working with other 2nd Lieutenants through Lieutenant Colonels determining guilt or innocence and assigning any appropriate punishment.  Also, I served as an Officer of the Court Martials at deck, summary and general court martial level trials.  My next assignment was to Marine Base Headquarters with the staff of generals A.K. Nobel and O.P. Smith as acting G-2 (Intelligence). It was and I still believe unusual that a 2nd Lieutenant or a woman Marine receive duty of such responsibility. An honor of a lifetime!”  Evelyn was released from active duty June 1952 to inactive reservist and officially resigned receiving an honorable discharge in September 1953.

While stationed at Camp Pendleton, CA Evelyn meet her future husband Orville Edward Sackett who was stationed there as 1st Lieutenant USMCR.  They married on March 1, 1952 in Yuma, Arizona.  Orville received another honorable discharge as 1st Lieutenant on June 20, 1952 and returned to work at USF&G Insurance Company in Kansas City, MO.  Orville and Evelyn were very involved in church starting at John Knox Presbyterian Church in Florissant, MO and ending at Canyon Creek Presbyterian Church in Richardson, TX.

Evelyn is survived by her children; David Sackett and wife, Rosemary of Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, Janice Sackett Montoya of Dallas, Texas and Mark Sackett and wife, Gayle of Allen, Texas; grandchildren, Clayton Sackett and Grant Sackett both of Allen, Texas; nephew, James Sackett and wife Kimberly; great nephew Barton Sackett II.
