Evelyn Joy (Hankins) Bowers

Evelyn Joy (Hankins) Bowers of Austin, Texas passed away January 26, 2022 at the age of 91.  Evelyn was born in McKinney, Texas May 4, 1930 to Ernest B. and Van Dona (Jones) Hankins. 

Evelyn was raised in McKinney, graduated from McKinney High School in 1948 and began working at the VA Hospital the very next week as a medical secretary.  In 1952 she married Charles Bowers, her high school sweetheart.  They had a 40-year journey together which included living in Richardson, Wichita Falls and Austin, Texas.  She was a member of Northwest Hills United Methodist Church in Austin.  Evelyn became a realtor while living in Austin, she also had a passion for volunteering with many charities including The March of Dimes, Senior Junior Form of Wichita Falls and the Assistance League of Austin. She loved to travel, visiting many countries and places, was an avid Bridge player belonging to several different groups and enjoyed watching University of Texas sports teams play.

She is survived by daughter, Belinda Bowers Baker and husband, David of Colleyville, Texas; daughter, Becky Bowers Hernandez and husband, Oscar of Austin, Texas; grandchildren, Charla Baker Sperring and husband, Trey of Cleburne, Texas; Emily Baker Roll and husband,  Evan of Fort Worth, Texas; Mathew Baker and wife, Raquel of Fort Worth, Texas; Joe Hernandez and Justin Hernandez of Austin, Texas; great grandsons, Vettel Baker and Robby Sperring.  

Preceding her in death was her husband Charles W. Bowers; infant son; parents, Ernest and Van Dona Hankins; sister, Virginia Dean; nephew, Louis Dean; brother and sister-in-law, H.K. (Hank) and Maymalee Hankins.

A graveside funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 1, 2022 at Ridgeview Memorial Park, Allen, Texas. Viewing and visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday.  Arrangements are being coordinated by Turrentine~Jackson~Morrow Funeral Home. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the American Diabetes Association.
