Ethel Hawthorne

On Friday, June 19, 1931, Ethel B. Hawthorne was born to the late James Hill and Alice Hightower in Nesbit, Mississippi. She began life anew and everlasting on the evening of Monday, June 22, 2020. 

She grew up on a farm with her cousins, Emma and Juanita.  While they were cousins, they were more like sisters. They loved spending time listening to The Grand Ole Opry, going to see the latest cowboy movies and occasionally to the fair. 

She moved to Memphis and became an active member of Greater White Stone Missionary Baptist Church where she served faithfully on the Usher Board.  In the summer of 2000, she moved to Plano, Texas and became a member of Shiloh Baptist Church before joining The New Life Community Church where she remained a faithful member with her son Gary E. Hightower, until her health began to decline.

Affectionately known as Ethel B, grandma, Ms. Ethel, momma Ethel, and Ms. E, she is fondly remembered for her love for Christ, love for fashion, her compassion, her quick-wit, and humor.

Honoring her life and cherishing her memory are her only son, Gary E. (Kimbra) Hightower of Plano, Texas. Three grandchildren, G. Brandon (Crystal) Hightower of Midlothian, Virginia, Shannon Y. Hightower of Houston, Texas and Stephanie N. Hightower of Dallas, Texas. Three great-grandchildren, Briana, Preston, and Mya Hightower of Midlothian, Virginia. Two step-grandchildren, Joshua Washington and Kourtlynn Washington of Dallas, Texas.  One brother, W.C. (Mattie) Garrison of Memphis, Tennessee, sisters Gloria Jean (George) Beauregard of Indio, California and Inez Lester of Amarillo, Texas, a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, friends, and a Special Love, Deacon Matthew Hunter of Murphy, Texas.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, July 2, 2020 at New Life Community Church, 25631 Smotherman Road, Frisco, Texas 75033.

Following the funeral service, a procession will make its way to Ridgeview Memorial Park for a committal service where all are invited to attend the committal service maintaining social distancing or you may remain in your vehicle. You will be able to listen to the service through speakers set up at the gravesite.

A “come and go” visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 1, 2020 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home. Only a limited number of guests will be allowed to enter the funeral home facility at any one time to maintain social distancing.
