Dr. Michael Lyle Payne, age 56, of McKinney, Texas, passed away September 9, 2016. Mike was born November 9, 1959, in Houston, Texas, to Robert Lamar and Wanda Lu (Alford) Payne. He married his high school sweetheart, Shawn Evans Forster on May 24, 1980, in Houston. Mike graduated from Stratford High School in Houston in 1978 where he played on the 1976 State Championship football team. He went on to earn a bachelor degree in engineering from Rice University in 1982, where he also played football. Mike received a master’s degree from the University of Houston and a PhD from Rice University. He worked for ARCO in Houston as a petroleum engineer and spent the rest of his career at British Petroleum going on to become a Distinguished Advisor. Mike strived for excellence in all that he did.
Mike was the love of Shawn’s life and a dedicated husband and father. He is survived by his wife, Shawn Payne of McKinney, Texas; daughters, Ashley Abernathy and husband, Jordan, also of McKinney and Amanda Payne of Dallas, Texas; “Pop Pop” to granddaughter, Allie Abernathy; parents, Robert and Lu Payne of Houston, Texas; sister, Sally Mitchell of Chappell Hill, Texas; brother, Mark Payne of San Antonio, Texas; and numerous other loving family members and friends.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, September 14, 2016, at First Baptist Church in McKinney, Texas. Interment will follow at Ridgeview Memorial Park in Allen, Texas. The family will receive friends during a visitation from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m., Tuesday evening at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home in Allen.
