Dorothy Mary Smith

Dorothy Mary Smith of Garland, Texas passed away January 23, 2019 at the age of 78.  She was born on March 5, 1940 in Mobile, Alabama. Dorothy grew up and attended high school in Mobile, Alabama. Later in life, she moved to Detroit, Michigan with her family. In 1959,   Dorothy married Leonard Smith of Greensboro, Alabama in Detroit and they shared a marriage of 32 years.   She worked in the food service industry for Cobo Hall, Burroughs Corporation and D&G Market. Her favorite work place was at Burroughs Corporation where she worked for a number of years. After the passing of her husband, Dorothy moved to Garland to live with her son where she lived until the Lord called her home. She loved the Lord and enjoyed reading the bible.   Dorothy’s hobbies included watching sports, crossword puzzles, gardening and reading.  She was a member of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church when she lived in Detroit. In 2005 she became a member of the First Baptist Church Hamilton Park in Richardson, Texas.   

Dorothy is survived by her children, Charlotte Fort'e of Phoenix, Arizona, Carnett Smith of Detroit, Michigan, Mike Smith of Garland, Texas, Otis Smith and wife, Nicole of Southfield, Michigan and Lory Smith of Garland, Texas; grandchildren, Chanike Sesay, Charlynn Fort’e, Charnise Fort'e, Charmane Fort’e, Chanel Fort’e, Michael Smith, Jr., March’e Davis, Ericka Davis and London Smith; eleven great-grandchildren; sister, Jeanette “Neta” Rule; brothers, Conrad Harris and Andre Harris; several nieces and nephews ; and a host of other loving family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Johnnie and Mattie Harris; husband, Leonard Smith; sister, Doris Windham; niece, Zelda Windham; and son-in-law, Cranston Forte.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, February 1, 2019 at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home Chapel, 2525 Central Expressway North, Allen, Texas 75013.  The family will receive friends during a visitation on Thursday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
