Doris Mae Mitchell of Allen, Texas passed away on September 19, 2020 at the age of 94. She was born December 7, 1925 to Paul Roselle Shaffer and Annabelle Miller in Sharon, Pennsylvania. Doris lived in Sharon, Pennsylvania where she attended schools and graduated from Sharon High School in 1943. She married William J. Mitchell on April 13, 1946 in Brooklyn, New York. Doris pursued her college degree in her thirties, graduating from Edinboro State University. Upon graduation, Doris decided to pursue a MSW from West Virginia University. Doris, until her retirement, was employed as a social worker for the Department of Welfare in Mercer County. Pennsylvania. Doris was a trail blazer before it was fashionable: telephone operator during WWII, boutique owner, book store owner, published writer, researcher, painter, crafter, and more. Employment history doesn’t really define though who she was. Doris, most of all, was a loving mother and wife. In her later years, she lived in Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. Wherever her children were, she was close by. Her profound love of her family filled our lives and hers.

She is survived by her daughter, Lt. Col. (Ret.) Caryl A. Mitchell of Allen, Texas and son, Todd W. Mitchell of Allen, Texas. 

Doris was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William J. Mitchell; daughter, Darby Joan Mitchell; brother, Paul D. Shaffer and sister, Phyllis Shaffer Hurayt.
