Donald Malcom Spurgin

Donald Malcom Spurgin, 82, of Celeste, Texas was born in Fairview area of Collin County, September 6, 1937 to Ottis Malcom and Nora Lewis Spurgin. He passed away on June 29, 2020 at his home in Celeste.

He attended Fairview Elementary as a one room school and graduated Plano High School which had less than 50 graduates.

Diversity was no stranger to Don, he wore many hats; he served in the military, worked as a fry cook, a gas station attendant and a few more different jobs until he eventually co-founded Encore Wire in McKinney, Texas.
Encore is a 2 million square foot manufacturing facility in McKinney, TX and is the leading manufacturer of copper and aluminum. Encompassing residential, commercial and industrial building wire. Encore wire is a major employer in the McKinney area.

Retiring in 1993 Don bought ranches and cattle. At one point he had 500 head of cattle on approximately 3000 acres. He loved his cutting horses and dogs. For over 10 years he was a participant of NCHA, National Cutting Horse Association. In 2008, “Dark Brow Playboy” won World Champion Novice Stallion, in his class. Don maintained up to 50 horses at one time with an extensive breeding program.

Many said, “Don would have enjoyed being born 100 years earlier when he could have lived a cowboy life of adventure, quick justice and nothing was as valuable as a man’s word and a handshake.”

Don was preceded in death by his parents, Ottis and Nora Spurgin; 2 brothers, John Wayne Spurgin and Doyle Bernard Spurgin. He is survived by his wife, Betty Smith; 2 daughters, Donna Spurgin Jones and husband, Daniel and
Jennifer Spurgin Howard and husband, Terrell; 2 sons, Newton Spurgin and wife Carolyn and Donald Spurgin and wife, Kym; 2 Sisters, Dianna “Kaye” Spurgin Bailey and husband, Fred and Eunice Prisscilla Spurgin Vensel; 8 grandchildren, Trevor Jones, Katelyn, Reagan, Colton, Betsy, Grant, Dylan and Reid; and 1 great-grandchild, Theo Boyd Spurgin; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral Services will be held 2PM Friday, July 3, 2020 Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Chapel, Leonard, Texas. Brother Marcus Stern will officiate. Interment will follow at Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Wolfe City, Texas. Pallbearers will be Trevor Jones, Reid Spurgin, Grant Spurgin, Nathan Vensel, Bobby Spurgin, Dylan Spurgin and Honorary Pallbearer, Colton Spurgin. A Come and Go viewing will be held 10AM-8PM Thursday, July 2, 2020 at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Chapel, Leonard, Texas. The family will receive friends from 6PM-8PM Thursday.
