Derrick Richard Templin was born October 28, 1987 to Richard Ray Templin and Susan Rose (Beaman) Templin in Lewisville, Texas and passed away on August 1, 2019. He is survived by his mother, Susan Templin of Thompson’s Station, Tennessee; two brothers Erik (Anna-Lise) of Fairview, Texas, and Kurt (Emily) of Spring Hill, Tennessee; three sisters Kristina Straubinger (Christian), Katherine Meade (Aaron), and Kara Templin, all of Thompson’s Station, Tennessee; as well as seven nephews and six nieces, whom Derrick adored. He was preceded in death by his father.
Derrick spent his early years living in Lewisville with his family. He was constantly smiling as he tried to keep up with his siblings. They were his favorite playmates. Derrick and his siblings were inseparable and would rough-house and play hard all day long. Often, he could be found exploring at the creek, riding bikes in the neighborhood, and simply enjoying his time outdoors. Derrick attended McAuliffe Elementary, and from a young age he proved to be a bright and dedicated student; always happy to learn and help others.
Throughout his early years, Derrick grew to love traveling. Some of his most memorable family experiences included exploring different attractions in Texas, such as the beaches in Corpus Christi, the Mesquite Rodeo, and attending Texas Ranger games. Derrick loved any adventure he could spend with his family, such as trips to visit his grandfather in Yuma, experiencing Disney World, and taking a special trip with his father to Florida.
In the fall of 1997, Derrick moved with his family to Parker, Colorado. There, he developed and cultivated lifelong friendships. In the fourth and fifth grades, Derrick learned to play the trumpet, just like his father. Unlike most children, he enjoyed helping out with the family chores. Derrick would help his parents clean, organize, repair, and maintain the home. He proved to be hardworking, and used this skill as a principle to build his future successes and life upon.
From a young age, Derrick loved sports. He shared this enthusiasm with his brothers. Derrick avidly followed all the professional sports teams, including football and basketball, with baseball being his favorite. He loved the camaraderie felt while playing and attending sporting events, and the excitement felt during the competitiveness of it. Derrick played roller hockey, basketball, and enjoyed regularly practicing at the batting cages.
Throughout his life, Derrick maintained a faith in God. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Derrick served as a missionary in the China Hong Kong Mission. As a volunteer representative of Jesus Christ, he preached Christian principles and faithfully served the people of Hong Kong. Derrick continued to maintain his belief in these principles and values and they were instrumental in how he conducted himself each and every day.
Derrick appreciated the value of hard work. His work ethic knew no bounds. As a teenager, Derrick started his first job at Good Times, dedicating his time and effort and moving quickly into the position of Assistant Manager. His leadership was an example to many. Education and real-world experience were equally important to Derrick. He valued education, and attended Arapahoe Community College where he received his associate’s degree while working and excelling at Edge Pest Control. Following this, Derrick went on to attend and thrive at Brigham Young University – Idaho, majoring in Business and minoring in Communications. He developed a knack in graphic design and attention to detail, and used these skills during his internship for Hays Companies. Derrick proved he was a diligent worker and was offered a full-time position at Hays Companies. Over the last nine years, Derrick conscientiously dedicated his time and effort as a Benefit Consultant, and received the 2018 Consistent Contributor Award. He was a teammate everyone loved and his contribution and influence will not be forgotten.
Derrick had an indescribable spark about him. He was quick-witted, always lighting up the room with his laughter. Derrick had a close relationship with his father and they would regularly go see new movies and grab lunch afterwards. He loved movies and the memories associated with them. Some of his favorite movies were Dumb and Dumber and the Jurassic Park series. Derrick always remembered movie quotes and sayings, and it became a game to see who could stump him. His accurate impersonations would make everyone laugh. Derrick loved spending each Independence Day with family, exploring haunted houses every fall, and playing video games with friends and family.
He was a devoted son, brother, and uncle. Derrick was a selfless individual, always concerned about every person in his family and their individual needs. To know him was to love him. Derrick displayed a remarkable work ethic, dedication, and commitment throughout his life.
For those wishing to attend, the funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, August 9, 2019 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 651 East Stacy Road, Fairview, Texas 75069. We are eternally grateful for the outpouring of support we have received over our loss. Many have inquired regarding flowers and donations. Rather than flowers, the family has chosen to make a donation to a charity to honor Derrick and help those suffering from mental illness.
