IN LOVING MEMORY

Dennis Myers

Apr 16 1964 - Jun 04 2020

On April 16, 1964, Dennis Michael Myers, was born in Detroit, Michigan to Ernest and Albertha (Bassett) Myers, who preceded him in death.

In June of 1983, Dennis met his forever love, Laurea Lynea Flowers, at her childhood home, and these two joined in holy matrimony on June 16, 1990. Dennis and Laurea are the parents of two children, Jazmen Bria (Myers) Johnson and Nile Michael Myers. Dennis instilled in his children the love of music, authenticity, and kindness to humanity.

Dennis accepted Christ in the fall of 1974 at the age of ten. He was an active member of the Exodus Missionary Baptist Church, where he was a member of the youth choir. He later played drums in the Exodus Gospel band. The band was a community of young Christian musicians who wrote and performed contemporary gospel music. Dennis firmly believed God was in the heart, and that God’s love was reflected in how you treat others through support, love, and generosity.

Dennis attended Detroit Public Schools in Michigan, where he was involved in the marching band and choir. He then graduated from Finney High School in 1982, went on to CIDSIP Technical School, and earned a computer system and technology certificate. Dennis was very excited about this career path and used his gifts of computers as well as spatial reasoning to cultivate a successful career in IT.

Dennis’s employment with Electronic Data Systems (EDS) inspired the newlywed’s relocation to Plano, TX. The southern suburbs were a stark change of pace for the city-born lovers. In 1995 Dennis began working for Southwestern Bell, which later turned into AT&T. Dennis retired from AT&T in December 2019 and started a consulting position with Accenture. His colleagues loved his genuine nature, supportive spirit, and attention to detail.

Dennis had a fanatical love of basketball. So much so that he and his best friend, Fred Curry II, created a fantasy basketball website, the Intergalactic Basketball League (IGBL), which is still running. Dennis’ favorite player was Tracey McGrady, and he had a bona fide love for the game.

Dennis grew up playing poker, tunk, spades, and many other games with his family and friends. Later in life, he became an avid poker player, traveling to Oklahoma, Las Vegas, and multiple WSOP circuit events to compete. Dennis developed a strong camaraderie with his fellow players that lovingly extended beyond the table.

Dennis had an eclectic taste in music, which satisfied his voracious appetite for diverse harmonies, complex acoustics, and soulful vocals. Music was a part of his DNA; his music catalog was impressive, and his favorite artist was Prince.

Dennis created a Boys to Men program where he mentored elementary and middle school boys alongside his close friends. Dennis was a transparent and honest man who spoke his truth and deeply loved his family.

Dennis transitioned to eternal life on the morning of June 4, 2020. He will be longingly missed.

He leaves many behind to cherish and honor his memory. Children: Jazmen B. Johnson and Nile M. Myers; Grandchild: Myles C. Johnson; Siblings: Brother, Kenneth L. Myers (Lillian) and Sisters, Linda Y. Myers and Michell A. Myers; and many other dear relatives and friends.
