Dennis Opheim

Dennis Opheim was a loving husband, father and friend who passed away October 15, 2013. Born in St. Paul, Minnesota, he was the son of the late John and Dolores (Holland) Opheim. Dennis was preceded in death by his son Bradley Dennis.

He is survived by his wife Kathleen, of 45 years and his daughter, Jeanne; also his sister and brother-in-law, Sharon and Bill Boehme; brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Brenda Opheim, Greg and Sharon Opheim all of Minnesota; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Dennis earned a PhD in microbiology and biochemistry from the University of Minnesota in 1973; and a post doctorate from Vanderbilt University in 1975. He was a tenured professor at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut, where he taught microbiology and biochemistry for 25 years. Dennis was an avid educator and did workshops with middle school teachers across the country to promote interest in the sciences. Dennis was involved for many years with the Cheshire Soccer Club. He loved to travel and had a keen interest in birding, hiking and mushrooming. Dennis also loved to play tennis and the guitar. Dennis’ deep love and tender gentle spirit will sustain us all for a lifetime.

The family would like to extend their deepest appreciation to Friends Place of McKinney, Hospice Plus and especially to family and friends for their love and support.

A remembrance gathering celebrating Dennis’ life will be held Monday, October 28, 2013, from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m., at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home, 2525 Central Expressway N., Allen, Texas. Memorial donations may be made to Friends Place of McKinney, 3300 Eldorado Parkway, Suite 500, McKinney, Texas 75070.
