Dennis Opheim

January 23, 1947 - October 15, 2013

Dennis Opheim was a loving husband, father and friend who passed away October 15, 2013. Born in St. Paul, Minnesota, he was the son of the late John and Dolores (Holland) Opheim. Dennis was preceded in death by his son Bradley Dennis.

He is survived by his wife Kathleen, of 45 years and his daughter, Jeanne; also his sister and brother-in-law, Sharon and Bill Boehme; brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Brenda Opheim, Greg and Sharon Opheim all of Minnesota; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Dennis earned a PhD in microbiology and biochemistry from the University of Minnesota in 1973; and a post doctorate from Vanderbilt University in 1975. He was a tenured professor at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut, where he taught microbiology and biochemistry for 25 years. Dennis was an avid educator and did workshops with middle school teachers across the country to promote interest in the sciences. Dennis was involved for many years with the Cheshire Soccer Club. He loved to travel and had a keen interest in birding, hiking and mushrooming. Dennis also loved to play tennis and the guitar. Dennis’ deep love and tender gentle spirit will sustain us all for a lifetime.

The family would like to extend their deepest appreciation to Friends Place of McKinney, Hospice Plus and especially to family and friends for their love and support.

Kathy, you were an amazing wife and caregiver to Denny to the very end. Barb and I are proud to have you both as "members" of Friends Place forever. Alex & Barb, November 6, 2013 Denny and Kathy have been dear freinds for many years. I will always treasure our shared times together exploring the wonders of the natural world. May he find peace in perfect rest. Signian McGeary, October 23, 2013 I’ll always remember Denny with a smile, kind word, and his passion for learning. I don’t know that I ever realized much less thanked Denny for his contributions to my life. Denny gave me educational toys (like microscopes and chemistry sets) when I was growing up in Buffalo. The seed he planted and cultivated in my youth subconsciously lead to my decision to attend the College of St. Thomas and trying for a Chemistry degree. I appreciate the encouragement now and I’m sure that he has this impact on 1,000’s of students worldwide. You will be missed. David Boehme, October 20, 2013 Dear Jeanne & Kathy: I was blessed to have met & known Dennis, just as I am blessed to know the two of you. His smile will be remembered always. Our deepest sympathy for your loss. Diana & Ricky Suber, October 20, 2013
