David Wagoner Blackerby

David Wagoner Blackerby was born December 24, 1941, in Bonham, Texas, the son of Samuel David and Madell Wagoner Blackerby. He went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on October 18, 2009. David grew up on the family farm in the Ely community of Fannin County. From an early age, he learned firm values through hard work and necessity. David was a lineman for the championship 1959 Whitewright Tiger football team and graduated from Whitewright High School in 1960. David married Jane Stapp of Leonard, Texas on April 11, 1964. They began their life together while David served in the United States Army, 30th Infantry, from which he was honorably discharged in 1966. He received a B.S. degree in Industrial Engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington in 1970. The Blackerby family settled in Leonard, Texas to raise their family. David worked for Texas Instruments and then for Fisher Controls in Sherman, Texas, where he retired in 2004. David loved his God, his church, his family and everybody else. His earthly mission was one of service. David was active in the First Baptist Church of Leonard as a deacon and Sunday School teacher. He traveled to India and Russia as a missionary with International Commission to reach out to others in need of spiritual strength. David served as Chaplain for Southern Baptist of Texas Disaster Relief where he ministered to Texas hurricane victims along the gulf coast. David was on the board of directors of the First Christian Academy of Leonard. David is survived by his wife of 45 years, Jane Blackerby of Leonard; mother, Madell Blackerby of Leonard; mother-in-law, Gladys Stapp of Leonard; sons and daughters-in-law, Scott and Kelli Blackerby of Leonard, Mark and Kacey Blackerby of McKinney, and John and Wendy Blackerby of Larkspur, Colorado; sisters and brothers-in-law, Delinda and Jim Lough of Sherman, and Susan and Herman Stegall of Meridian, Mississippi; brother and sister-in-law, Ted and Nancy Blackerby of Arlington; sisters-in-law and husbands, Martha and Dennis Braddock of Springfield, Virginia, Vicky and Darrell Edwards of Tyler, and Becky and Richard Parr of Ann Arbor, Michigan; grandchildren, Seth, Brooke, and Ella Blackerby; and foreign exchange student who David thought of as his own daughter, Natalya Effertz; her husband Nils, and son Jacob of Malvern, Pennsylvania. David was preceded in death by his father, Samuel David Blackerby. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, October 21, 2009, in the First Baptist Church of Leonard, Texas, with Rev. Denny Gorena and Rev. Mickey Wagoner officiating. Pallbearers will be Robert Damesworth, Eugene Kegans, Douglas Latimer, Tom McCartney, West Blackerby, Drew Braddock, and Robert Edwards. Honorary pallbearers will be the deacons of the First Baptist Church of Leonard. Interment will follow in the Leonard Cemetery. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home in Leonard, Texas. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Christian Academy of Leonard, C/O First Baptist Church of Leonard, P.O.
