Colonel Val Howell Canon, Jr., a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away peacefully on April 10, 2025, in McKinney, Texas, at the age of 92.
He was born on December 21, 1932, in San Antonio, Texas, to Val Howell Canon, Sr. and Gilma (Littleton) Canon. Val graduated from Abilene High School in 1951 and went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in Architecture from Texas A&M University in December of 1955. A proud former member of the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets, he never lost his deep connection to the Aggieland community.
On December 26, 1958, Val married the love of his life, Ruth Bonifield, in Abilene, Texas. Together, they shared 63 years of cherished memories, unwavering loyalty and enduring love until her passing.
Val was a natural leader in every sense - an accomplished military officer, a gifted architect and a pillar of strength and wisdom for those who knew him. He served his country and community with integrity, always carrying himself with quiet determination and unwavering purpose.
Above all else, Val was a faithful follower of Christ, the foundation upon which he built his life and family. He spent many years volunteering with Baptist Men, and together with Ruth, played in the orchestra at First Baptist Church Dallas. This was a special time that brought him great joy, along with many sweet friends.
His legacy is one of grace, honor and enduring love. He touched countless lives and will be deeply missed.
He is survived by his daughters, Alison McCally and husband, Todd and Claire Gentzel and husband, Todd, all of McKinney, Texas; son, Spencer Canon and wife, Samantha of Bishop, California; grandchildren, Brooke McCally and fiancée, Charles Wiltraut, Justin McCally and wife, Katie, Ryan Canon, Luke Canon, Xander, Emery, and Avery Gentzel; great-grandchildren, Tinley and Blake McCally; niece, Sheri Tucker; and a host of other loving family members and cherished friends.
Val was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Bonifield Canon; son, Baron Canon; and younger sister, Sheryl Branscum.
