Colin Craig Curtis, age 76, passed away June 14, 2024 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. At the time, he was cared for by Paradigm Homecare in McKinney, Texas.
He was born on May 5, 1948 in Mason, Michigan. Colin graduated from Dansville High School in Dansville, Michigan. He attended Eastern Michigan University, earning a BA in English/History Education and went on to receive a Master of Arts degree in Administration Education. He chose to not pursue Administration throughout his 48 years of teaching, as he said his real love was working with students. During his years of teaching, he also coached basketball, which was his first love, from playing it when he was young to coaching it as an adult. In addition, he coached track and assisted with football and volleyball. He taught school in Dearborn Heights, Michigan, Cross Roads, Texas, and Commerce, Texas. Everyone called him “Coach”, even years after retiring, he would see ex-students, and “Coach” was his name.
Colin was easily entertained by reading, watching sports on tv, playing with grandchildren, playing table games with family, going to the casino, and attending family functions. He really liked golfing with his son and son-in-law and earned two holes-in-one, which was a special joy to him, and he even had witnesses. Our favorite things about Colin were his sarcastic sense of humor and his loud laughter that could be heard all over.
Colin is survived by his wife, Melody, of 41 years. Also surviving are his son, Chad (Amy) Underwood, and granddaughter, Callie Underwood, all of McKinney, Texas; his daughter, Marcy (Kent) Norwood, and grandchildren, Bryce Norwood and Cassie Norwood of Melissa, Texas and Spence Norwood of Davis, CA. Surviving also are his brother-in-law, Monte Shuck, of Rives Junction, Michigan and sister-in-law, Mary Curtis, of Pinckney, Michigan. Many nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends also survive.
Colin was preceded in death by his son Tobin Curtis, age 7, in 1982; his father and mother, Lloyd and Helen Curtis, of Stockbridge, Michigan; his brother, Kirk Curtis, of Stockbridge, Michigan; and his sister, Carol Shuck, of Jarrell, Texas.
A memorial service and celebration of life will be held in Michigan in July. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in his memory.
