Christopher Columbus Stephens Jr.

Christopher Columbus Stephens Jr., age 88, passed away on Wednesday, January 8, 2020, in Frisco, Texas. He was born on September 25, 1931, in Wisner, Louisiana, to Ozora (Ferrington) and Christopher Columbus Stephens Sr. Christopher proudly served his country in the United States Air Force and obtained the rank of Master Sergeant. He received many awards including a Good Conduct Medal with Five Bronze Loops and a National Defense Service Medal with One Bronze Service Star. After serving twenty-one years as an air traffic controller in the Air Force, he retired and continued as an Air Traffic Controller ten more years for the Federal Aviation Agency. When he joined the Air Force, Christopher started going by the name “Steve”. Elsie Mae Culpepper met Steve while he was stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia. They were married in Cusetta, Georgia, on January 11, 1952; and were the picture of true love for 61 years.

Christopher is survived by his children, Daniel Webster Stephens and his wife, Lillian, of Alexander City, Alabama;  Christopher John Stephens and his wife, Robin, of Sulpher Springs, Texas;  and Deborah Diane DePauw of Frisco, Texas.  Lovingly known as “Papa” to his ten grandchildren, Gregory (Rita) Stephens, Joseph Stephens, Tori (Joe) Thetford, Chrystal Kemp, Tiffany (Trey) Hall, Amber (Kyle) Waters, Tiaria (Steven) Shields, Jason (Nicole) DePauw, Kevin DePauw, and Joshua (Amber) DePauw; and “Papa” to  his  twenty-seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. He is also survived by his sister, Jeanette (Billy Joe) James of Louisiana; his brother, Webster (Ruth) Stephens of Wisner, Louisiana; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ozora and Christopher Stephens Sr.; his wife, Elsie Mae Stephens; his sister, Annie Kimble; and brothers, Charlie Stephens and J.D. Stephens.

The family invites friends to a visitation at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home, 8520 Main Street, Frisco, Texas, on Friday, January 10, 2020, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.  The funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, January 11, 2020, at 2:00 p.m., officiated by Dr. Christopher Stephens. Interment will be at DFW National Cemetery on Wednesday, January 15, 2020, at 11:30 a.m.
