Christene Stroup “Nanny”, age 98, of Verona, Texas, passed away February 24, 2018. Christene was born November 10, 1919, in Sulphur Springs, Texas, to Louis Eli and Blanche (Stokes) Whitt. She married Wesley Windle Stroup on April 18, 1936. Christene worked for North American Aircraft during World War II. She was a seamstress and a farmer. Christene took care of her family and friends. Christene was a member of Verona Methodist Church in Verona, Texas.
She is survived by her grandchildren, Kevin Bates, Kent Bates and wife, Krysta, and Kody Bates and wife, Christi, all of Verona, Texas; great-grandchildren, Justin Bates, Haley Bates, Dakota Bates, Hunter Bates, and Leven Bates; several nieces and nephews; and numerous loving relatives and neighbors.
She was preceded in death by her husband, daughter, Beverly Stroup Bates, sisters, Cumi Taylor and Virginia Douglas, and brother,Lewis Whitt.
A funeral service will be held at 12:00 Noon, Tuesday, February 27, 2018, at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Chapel in Allen, Texas. Interment will follow at Stroup Family Cemetery in Verona, Texas. The family will receive friends during a visitation from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., Monday evening at the funeral home.
