C. B. Burchfield

Columbus Boyd (C. B.) Burchfield, age 84, of Bonham, Texas, died Wednesday, January 28, 2009, at Red River Regional Hospital in Bonham, Texas. He was born April 24, 1924 in Ector, Texas to Charley and Megella (Stilwell) Burchfield. Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 31, 2009 at 12:00pm at Earnheart Funeral Chapel in Whitewright. The family will receive friends from 11:00am until service time at the Chapel. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Whitewright, Texas. Officiating the service will be Rev. Morgan Malone, Rev. Bill Beasley and Rev. Joe Smith. C.B. was a graduate of Whitewright High School in 1942. He then attended Austin College for his freshman year where he lettered in Football. He then served his nation in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. While in the service he married the love of his life Lila Nell Hudson on October 19, 1943 in Durant, Oklahoma. They were married for over 65 years. Following his service, he was honored to enjoy his love of baseball as a Third Baseman for the New York Yankees farm team. During his life he served in many different jobs. He was a salesman for Firestone & Goodyear, receiving many salesmanship awards. He was a long time greeter at the Wal-Mart in Bonham. Later he was employed by the V.A. Hospital in Bonham. He was a member and Deacon at the First Baptist Church in Bonham. C. B. always had a smile and a laugh and never met a stranger. C. B. loved sports. He was co-founder of the Fannin County All Sports Hall of Fame, a member of the Fannin County Old Timers Baseball Association, a member of the U.S. Army Air Force Old Timers Association (Yanks) of Edmonton, Canada. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Bonham Masonic Lodge. He is also survived by his wife Lila Burchfield of Bonham; two daughters, Becky Pickle and husband Joe of Denton; Bonnie Reed and husband Gary of Sherman Oaks, California; two grandsons, Nathan Pickle and wife Sara of Dallas; Neal Pickle of Dallas; great-grandtwins, Caroline and Luke Pickle of Dallas; two sisters, Marjorie Hughes of Tyler; Barbara Frey and husband Bert of Tyler; two brothers, Clovis Burchfield and wife Betty of Arlington; Wayne Burchfield and wife Charlotte of Lake Fork; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Virgil Lee Burchfield and Charley Clifton Burchfield; and sister, Ellen Marie Burns. Arrangements are being handled by Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow's Earnheart Funeral Home, 201 W. Maple St., Whitewright, Texas.
