IN LOVING MEMORY

Betty Jane Watson

Mar 23 1929 - Mar 11 2026

Betty Jane Watson, of McKinney, Texas, passed away peacefully on March 11, 2026, just short of her 97th birthday. She was born on March 23, 1929, to Dewey Heard and Irene (Hudson) Heard in Dow, Oklahoma. Betty lived a remarkable life filled with love, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to education. Her family was by her side in her last moments.

Betty was a proud product of Haileyville Public Schools where her passion for learning began. She went on to earn her bachelor’s degree from Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant, Oklahoma. At the age of 19 she hosted “Aunt Betty’s Story Hour” on KTMC radio in McAlester, Oklahoma, reading little golden books she had saved from her childhood to children. Then for over three decades, she devoted herself to teaching, impacting countless young minds; first in Oklahoma for two years and then for an impressive 30 years in the Texas Education System, where she taught first grade. Her love for education was palpable, and her students often left her classroom inspired and eager to learn more.

On August 30, 1952, Betty married her beloved husband, Charles Wayne Watson, and together they shared 42 wonderful years filled with love, laughter, and cherished moments.

Betty's roots ran deep in her heritage, being a daughter of an original enrollee of the Choctaw Nation. She actively participated in community events and after retirement was a proud volunteer at the Heard Museum. For 31 years she was a devoted member of the First United Methodist Church in McKinney where she formed countless friendships and always welcomed new faces with her warm smile.

Described as a people person, Betty had a way of making everyone feel special. She never met a stranger and had a unique gift for brightening any room she walked into. Her kindness, compassion, and ability to connect with others left a lasting impact on all who had the pleasure of knowing her.

Betty will be deeply missed by her family and friends, leaving a legacy of love and kindness that will be remembered by those she touched. In the hearts of those who knew her, Betty’s light will forever shine brightly.

Betty is survived by her daughter, Tammy Kraman and husband, Mike of Plano, Texas; grandchildren, Mel Kraman of Vancouver, Washington and Sarah Roberts and husband, Tyler of Salt Lake City, Utah; sister, Suzanne Heard, of Haileyville, Oklahoma who was born on Betty’s ninth birthday; and numerous other loving family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Wayne Watson; parents, Dewey and Irene Heard; sister, Marcella Presson; and grandparents, Peter James Hudson and Amanda Jane.

A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, March 17, 2026, at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Chapel, 2525 Central Expressway North, Allen, Texas 75013.
