With sadness, but gratefulness for her long life, we report the passing of our mother, Betty Hathaway Livingston on June 17, 2026 at the age of 105. Betty was born in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin on August 11, 1920 to Warner and Mabel Hathaway.
A child of the Depression, she nevertheless had a wonderful childhood and young adulthood along with older sister, Doris (Thompson), in Madison, Wisconsin. Betty graduated from the University of Wisconsin (Madison) with a degree in art education. She taught for a short time until her marriage in 1944 to Major John W. Livingston, beginning their 55-year marriage and her life as a supportive and very involved Air Force wife.
During these years, she also pursued her lifelong passion for painting. Her many beautiful works of art have brought joy to her daughters’ and grandchildren’s homes, as well as to art lovers who purchased her paintings.
After John’s retirement in Austin, Texas, a city they loved, they enjoyed bridge games and get-togethers with their many friends. It was also a time for travel as a couple to Europe, Alaska, and their special place…Hawaii.
Betty is survived by her three daughters: Kathy (Paul) Gerth, Mary (Michael) Yon, Anne (Cliff) Oravec; six grandchildren: Matthew Gerth, Andrew (Lori) Gerth, Christopher (Jennifer) Yon, Laura (Aaron) Metcalf , Jonathan (Stephanie) Oravec, Alyssa Oravec (Kevin O’Flaherty); eight great-children: Alex Yon (fiancé, Mitchell Poche), Peyton Yon, Addison Metcalf (fiancé Kaleb Webster), Tatum Metcalf, Cohen Metcalf, Tatiana Gerth, Vincent Gerth, and Traejan Oravec.
Betty will rest in peace with John at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, June 24, 2026 at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas.
