Benny Jerome Self, age 71, of Blue Ridge, Texas, passed away December 16, 2016. Benny was born March 11, 1945, in Collin County, Texas, to Ounkis Jerome “Shorty” and Margaret Nan (Smith) Self. He grew up in Collin County and attended schools in Wylie, Texas. Benny married Brenda Gayle Haney on March 15, 1963 in McKinney, Texas. He worked at Luminators, General Mills, and Kitchen Vent and then obtained his barber’s license in 1965. Benny owned and operated Self’s Barber Shop from 1973 until 2007. He loved spending time with his family. Benny also loved animals and enjoyed horse trading. He enjoyed aggravating people. Benny was a member of Snow Hill Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Brenda Self of Blue Ridge, Texas; children, Mike Self and wife, Vickie of Whitewright, Texas, Kevin Self and wife, Bridget, also of Whitewright, Bryan Self and wife, Christina of Farmersville, Texas, and Jennifer Rodriguez and husband, Brian of Blue Ridge; grandchildren, Kasey, Matt, Ashley, Katie, A.J., Savanna, Kagen, Kylie, Ryan, Karli, Lyla, and Macy; great-grandchildren, Breana, Bella, Alice, Lynnlee, Loftin, Cooper, and Brenley; sister, Betty Watkins and husband, Babe of Wylie, Texas; and a host of other loving family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Elaine Cooper.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, December 19, 2016, at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Chapel in Allen, Texas. Interment will follow at Wilson Chapel Cemetery in Lowry Crossing, Texas. The family will receive friends during a visitation from 3:00 – 6:00 p.m., Sunday evening at the funeral home.
