Anna Jaunell "Nellie" Canup

Anna Jaunell “Nellie” Canup of McKinney, Texas passed away February 21, 2020 at the age of 86.  She was born on November 24, 1933 to Herman Leslie Shaw and Lizzie Viola (Woodall) Shaw in Graham Point, Texas.  Nellie married Randall Eugene “Chic” Canup on June 11, 1955 in Royse City, Texas.  She had a passion for teaching and started the kindergarten program in Princeton with 42 five-year olds in 1971. In January of 2019, Nellie was honored with the news of the “Nellie Canup Early Learning Center” in her honor which is scheduled to open in the fall of 2020.  She cared dearly for her students and kept in touch with them.  Nellie enjoyed Southern Gospel Concerts, yardwork, and cooking for large groups.  She was a devoted member of Heritage Church of McKinney and loved her church family.  Nellie most loved spending time with her great-granddaughters.

She is survived by her son, Mark Canup and wife, Gladys of Temple, Texas; daughter, Marsha Canup of McKinney, Texas; grandchildren, Billy Makovy of Georgetown, Texas and Carissa Makovy Cowan and husband, Kevin of Belton, Texas; great-grandchildren, Kyndal Cowan and Camryn Cowan; sister, Judy Knight and husband, David of Pilot Grove, Texas; numerous nieces, nephews, other loving family and friends.

Nellie was preceded in death by her husband, “Chic” Canup; parents; adopted son, Bobby Wayne Summerville; brothers, Wendall Lloyd Shaw, Rodney Shaw, Jerrell (Homer) Shaw and Mickey Lynn Shaw; and sister-in-law, Patsy Ruth Shaw.

A celebration of life memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, February 24, 2020 at Heritage Church of McKinney, 4045 West Eldorado Parkway, McKinney, Texas 75070. The family will receive guest one hour prior to the service. Nellie will be laid to rest by her husband at a graveside service to be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, February 24, 2020 at Rest Haven Memorial Park in Rockwall, Texas.

In lieu of flowers at Nellie’s request, donations to the Early Learning Center of school supplies may include crayons, glue sticks, washable markers, sharpies, construction paper, manilla paper, etc. will be accepted prior to the service or donations to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
