Amy Joe Caudle Chitwood, affectionately known as Joe, passed away peacefully on May 13, 2025, at the remarkable age of 101. Born on March 27, 1924, in Fort Smith, Arkansas, Joe was named after her grandfather—a name she wore proudly and with grace throughout her life.
On August 19, 1942, Joe eloped with the love of her life, L.D. Chitwood, beginning a marriage filled with adventure, devotion, and deep family bonds. As L.D. pursued a career in the U.S. Navy, the couple made homes in Washington, California, and the Philippines. After retirement, they settled in Apache Junction, Arizona, where they embraced a slower pace and stayed closely connected to family and community.
Joe was preceded in death by her beloved husband, L.D.; her daughter, Freda Jean Wood; grandchildren Tracie Lynn Bray, Denise Rene Walls, and Gregory Alan Wood. Though she endured great loss, she carried her love for each of them with quiet strength and enduring faith.
She is survived by her daughter, Vickie Lynn Bray, and son-in-law, Tommy Lynn Bray; grandchildren Jessica Lynn Bray, Deborah Rae Morris, and Dale Lee Wood; eight great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. Her family meant everything to her, and she delighted in being present for milestones big and small.
A dedicated stay-at-home mom, Joe poured her energy into caring for those around her. She volunteered faithfully at church, found joy in square dancing, loved to travel and read, and rarely missed a good game—whether it was football, baseball, golf, or bull riding. She had a deep appreciation for antiques and enjoyed discovering pieces that told a story. She loved the color pink, crazy socks, and was a lifelong fan of the Oklahoma State Cowboys and began cheering for the Dallas Cowboys after moving to Frisco in 2008.
Joe loved the Lord with all her heart. Her faith was a steady light in her life and a source of comfort to those who knew her. Her joyful spirit, generosity, and deep love for others leave a lasting legacy. She will be missed dearly and remembered always—with laughter, love, and gratitude for a life so beautifully lived.
A service celebrating Joe’s life will be held at Stonebriar Community Church, 4801 Legendary Drive, Frisco, Texas 75034 Thursday, May 22, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. in the Ministry Center.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Joe’s memory to the American Cancer Society, Toys for Tots, or Stonebriar Community Church.
