Adam “5” McAndrew Harvey, age 40, of Celina, Texas, passed away June 5, 2024. Adam was born July 26, 1983, in Dallas, Texas, to Edwin Andrew and Janet (Veerman) Harvey.
He is survived by his parents, Andy and Janet Harvey of Celina, Texas; sister, Kristin Harvey Franks and husband, Russell of Celina; brothers, Ryan Thomas Harvey also of Celina and Ross Roby and wife, Lisa of Argyle, Texas; nephews, Jackson and Ryder Franks; aunt, Vicki Johnson and husband, Bill; uncle, Chris Harvey “Uncle Buck”; and cousins, Bradley Johnson and Amy Redus.
Adam was preceded in death by his grandparents, Mar and Papa “Weary” Veerman and Mimi and Poppy Harvey.
The Harveys moved to Celina, Texas, in June 1998. Adam began his high school football career with the Celina Bobcats while being placed on the varsity team as one of two freshmen. The Bobcats would go on to win the 2A State Championship by winning their final nine games. In 1999, the Bobcats would go undefeated by winning their second 2A State Championship. Adam was the starting slotback supporting a superior Bobcat offense. In 2000, Adam would become the starting running back. The Bobcats were very deep in talent and for the second straight year they would go undefeated and advance to the 2A State Championship game against the Mart Panthers. Mart entered the game undefeated. Many high school football fans would describe the game as one of the greatest ever played in the state. Celina would go on to defeat the Panthers and Adam was named the MVP of the game. In 2001, the Celina Bobcats would return a solid roster of players. Once again, they extended their winning streak to 56 wins as they entered the 2A Championship game against the Garrison Bulldogs. By the end of the first half Garrison had a two-touchdown lead. The second half, #5 started churning out yards and touchdowns. Ultimately, the Bobcats defeated the Bulldogs and added their 57th consecutive win to the streak and their fourth consecutive State Championship. Once again, Adam was named the MVP of the game. Adam was named Sonic Male Athlete of the year for 2002 along with being named the Dave Campbell’s Texas Football 2001 Player of the Year.
Adam excelled in baseball. Upon arrival in 1998 Celina High School baseball hardly existed. When ball started in the spring, the Bobcats cobbled together a decent lineup. Two freshmen led the way, Adam Harvey and Brian Babbit. This duo would lead the Bobcats to four consecutive district championships. By 2002, the Bobcats had become equally known for baseball as well as football. Harvey and Babbit would carry Celina to the state championship tournament in Round Rock, Texas. In the opening game, the Weimer Wildcats were the defending 2A Champions. With a wild finish, the Bobcats would score the winning run in the bottom of the seventh with two outs. The next night, the Bobcats would face the Holliday Eagles. The Bobcats would add a state championship in baseball to the trophy case. Adam was named the MVP in the game as he hit a double and triple.
On the way to Round Rock, Adam had learned he had been drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 32nd round of the major league draft. Adam had already determined he would play college baseball at Grayson College in Denison thus passing up his opportunity to play college football at Oklahoma State University as he had signed a scholarship letter in February.
After two frustrating seasons at Grayson College, he endured injuries including Tommy John surgery. Even though injured, the Cubs drafted him again! In the spring of 2004, New Mexico State offered Adam the opportunity to play for the Aggies. In the fall, he reported to school in Las Cruces, New Mexico. He spent the fall gaining his health back. By spring of 2005 he was ready to go. In his first appearance as designated hitter against Arizona State, he hit two homeruns. He was then set to play, and he enjoyed a very successful first year with the Aggies. The 2005 season was even better as the hit over .300 and had double digit homeruns. He was selected second team all-conference in the WAC. As he progressed into his senior season with the Aggies, he was selected on the preseason watch list for the Brooks Wallace Award given annually to the top college player. The season moved along; he did not hit as well as the past two years. He did catch well and was named the first team all-conference.
After a short stint in the independent baseball league, he elected to step away from baseball. For the past six years, he has been employed within the insurance industry. Adam’s love for baseball has been shared with his two nephews who are promising baseball players.
Adam graduated from Celina High School in 2002. He obtained his bachelor's degree from New Mexico State University in 2009.
