Abraham Olassa Varghese of Carrollton, Texas passed away June 29, 2021 at the age of 75. He was born on September 24, 1945 to O.C. Abraham and Sosamma Abraham in Kerala, India. He was their third of four children and was fondly referred to as “Bejoy”. Bejoy completed his college studies with Bachelor’s degree in Economics at Saint Berkman’s College in Changanacherry. After college he moved to Mumbai, Maharashtra and started working at the national income tax office for the next ten years. While attending the same Church in Mumbai, he met Mary in 1968. Bejoy and Mary were both involved in the Drama Club at church and would often act in plays together. They later got married on December 17, 1972. Bejoy and Mary had their first child, Binoy, on May 31, 1974. Looking for better life and career opportunities, they decided to emigrate to United States. Mary came to the U.S. in February 1976 and then Bejoy came a year later in 1977. They settled in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Binoy was able to emigrate to the U.S. in 1978 and later that year Bejoy and Mary had their second child, Susan. Over the course of several years, Bejoy held various positions at several companies and eventually pursued a position at Mutual Pharmaceuticals. Over 15 years he worked his way to being the Manager of Quality Assurance and subsequently retired in 2011.
During his time in Philadelphia, he and the family became a part of Indian Catholic community. He helped in the early stages of forming this community. Bejoy held various elected positions in the Indian Catholic Association and the first Secretary of the Indian Catholic Mission in 1979. He was an active member of other cultural associations as well. He enjoyed being an active member of the community. He and Mary continued pursing their love of acting while participating in the church’s drama club.
In 2019, Bejoy and Mary permanently relocated to Texas to be closer to family after experiencing some health issues.
Bejoy passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, while on hospice on June 29, 2021. Bejoy leaves behind his wife of 48 and ½ years, Mary Varghese, who will miss him dearly. He is also survived by his children, Binoy Varghese (Chetal Bhakta) and Susan Mathew (Jerry Mathew); grandchildren, Christopher, Joseph, Tyler, Joshua, Mia and Leela, who refer to him as “Papa” or “Appacha” or “Dada” will miss their playtime with him. Bejoy is also survived by his siblings, Rosamma Paul, Kurien Abraham (Selin) and Jaisamma Cyriac and various nieces and nephews and cousins throughout the world.
He was preceded in death by his parents, O.C. and Sosamma Abraham, his oldest brother, Abraham Cyriac (Babu), and his brother in law, Paul Paliath (Balu).
A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, July 9, 2021 at The Holy Cross Catholic Church, 7000 Morning Star Drive, The Colony, Texas 75056. Interment will follow at Ridgeview Memorial Park in Allen, Texas.
The family will receive friends during a visitation on Thursday, July 8, 2021, from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a rosary from 7:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home in Allen, Texas.
