William A. Snider

William A. Snider was born in San Antonio, Texas on December 18, 1923, to parents, Hester A. Snider and Lucile Blair Snider. He died on Thursday, September 30, 2010 in Allen, Texas . At six weeks old, he and his family moved to McKinney, Collin County, Texas, the Snider family home. He began school at North Ward School and finished at McKinney High School in 1942. After his first year at North Texas State college, he enlisted in the United States Army Air Force and was stationed at Hickam Field, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, remaining in the service until 1947. He was married by his grandfather, Rev. Joseph Benjamin Snider, to Dortha Helen Dotson on May 19, 1944 while on leave from the service. Bill and Helen had three daughters, Dianne, Patti and Susan. After the war, Bill worked as a licensed funeral director with Harris Funeral Home in downtown McKinney. Later he worked a short time for McKinney Cotton Mill before finding his more than 30 year career with the federal government at the Veterans Administration agency. He was a fiscal officer for the VA in McKinney, Bonham and Lincoln, Nebraska, then retired from the VA after his posting in Shreveport, LA. Although he had three daughters, Bill actively participated in boys’ youth sports programs. In McKinney, he coached a boys’ baseball team, became a football and basketball official and taught a 16 year old boys Sunday School class at First Baptist Church, McKinney Texas. Upon moving to Bonham, he was instrumental in improving the youth baseball facility and refereed both football and basketball games. He was president of the North Texas Officials organization and refereed High School and Junior High games all over North Texas for many years. He loved to play golf, and was a lifelong football and baseball fan. In 2007, Bill and Helen returned to Collin County and became members of The Oaks Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, and Helen D. Snider, his beloved wife of 67 years, and brother, Joe Ben Snider. He is survived by his daughter, Dianne Erwin and husband, Tim, of Paris, TX; his daughter, Patti Rainey, and husband Roland, of Allen, TX; and daughter, Susan Snider, of Shreveport, LA. Bill was also loved by his grandchildren, Stephanie Williams Dahms, Brett Williams, Scott Erwin, Amy Erwin Barclay and Colin Lepore. He and Helen adored their great grandchildren, Tyler Landis, Madison Erwin, Isabelle Williams, Jaxson Williams, Skyler Williams and Noah Barclay. The family wishes to thank The Belmont at Twin Creeks for the loving care of both of their parents. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, October 3, 2010, at 4:00 pm, at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Chapel, in Allen, Texas, with Dr. Danny Buster officiating. Interment will follow at Pecan Grove Cemetery, McKinney, Texas. Family and friends are invited to the funeral home at their convenience to pay their respects and to sign the register book on Saturday.
