Virginia Claire Thompson

Mrs. Virginia (Sumrall) Thompson passed away December 14, 2008, at the Medical Center of McKinney, Texas. She was born December 4, 1933, in Clarksdale, Mississippi. Before she entered school her parents moved to Meridian, Mississippi where she grew up and graduated from high school. She attended Southern Mississippi where she graduated with BA and MA degrees. She worked as a student councilor at Florida State University, and with the American Red Cross in Korea and at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. On June 14, 1962, she married William S. Thompson, III and moved to Dallas, Texas. In 1964, they moved to Lucas, Texas. Virginia was a devoted wife, a loving mother, and grandmother. “Her children arise up and call her blessed”. She was also devoted to her community and church. She served as a Red Cross volunteer in Dallas, in the PTA at Lovejoy, as a substitute teacher and as a supporter of the band in Allen, and as a bible school teacher and member of the First Baptist Church in Allen. Virginia was a 50 year member of the DAR serving as a Regent of the John Abston Chapter in McKinney and the organizing regent of the General Bernardo de Galvez Chapter in Allen. Her ancestor, patriot John Coats provided supplies to forces in South Carolina. She had just recently been named Honorary Chapter Regent. She is survived by her husband, William; son, William IV and wife, Cindy of Nevada, Texas; daughter, Violet Claire and husband, Chet Wittel of Waleska, Georgia; grandchildren, Tanya, Bobby, Elizabeth, Allison, and Taylor; and great grandchildren, C.J., Colton and Selene. Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m., Friday, December 19, 2008, at the First Baptist Church of Allen. The family will receive friends for a visitation from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Thursday at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Red Cross.
