Vernell N. Henry

 Vernell N. Henry, age 96, of Grapevine, Texas, formerly of McKinney, Texas, passed away October 15, 2016.  Vernell was born February 13, 1920, in Leonard, Texas, to Hugh Frank and Jeanette (Duffie) Baum.  She married Berford L. Henry on December 26, 1942, in Purcell, Oklahoma.  They had been married 65 years before Berford passed in 2008.  Vernell graduated from Oklahoma University where she received both her B.A. and M.A. in Education.  She began her career teaching in small schools in rural Oklahoma, including a one-room, grades 1-8, school where three of her children attended.  She and Berford moved to Temple, Oklahoma, where they both taught from 1956-1965 until moving to McKinney ISD where they taught for many years.  After retirement, Vernell served as President of the Retired Teachers Association, and spent her leisure time reading, traveling, journaling, and having fun with family.  She served her Lord at First Baptist Church of McKinney, teaching Sunday School and ministering through WMU.  Vernell spent her final years at Dancing River Assisted Living in Grapevine where she continued to entertain local friends and family with vivid stories of her past.

Vernell is survived by her children, Patrick Henry and wife, Nancy, of Tiger, Georgia; Julia Lloyd and husband, George, of Grapevine; David Henry and wife, Mary Lou, of El Paso; Betty Doyle of New Ulm; and Mary Lewis and husband, Mike, of Sachse.  She has nine grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, a sister, Margaret Patterson, and a multitude of extended family members.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one sister, two brothers, and two grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 12:00 Noon, Saturday, October 22, 2016, at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Chapel in Allen, Texas.  Interment will follow at Ridgeview Memorial Park in Allen.  Family and friends are invited to the funeral home at their convenience on Friday to pay their respects and to sign the register book.
