Stroud Ben Nesbitt was born on March 15, 1920 on his father’s birthday at their family home in Nesbitt, Texas just west of Marshall. He died on May 30, 2011 in McKinney, Texas surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Margaret Manley Nesbitt, as well as his two children: Rose Anne Nesbitt Mott and her husband, Kenneth, and Earl Stroud Nesbitt and his wife, Kim; and a Daughter-In-Law, Janet Nesbitt James. He was blessed by his seven grandchildren: Mindi Nesbitt O’Neal and her husband, Steven; John Stuart Mott and his wife, Jennifer; Elizabeth Mott; Ben Nesbitt and his wife, Allison; Jonethan Nesbitt; Andrew Nesbitt; and Sarah Nesbitt. His four great-grandchildren who always brought a smile to his face are: Shelby and Gabe O’Neal, Gillian Hill, and Sam Mott. Stroud was preceded in death by his parents, Earl V. and Bonnie Stroud Nesbitt, by his sister Edna Earl Heyen Goodson, and by his son Gabe Nesbitt. Stroud grew up on the family farm in Nesbitt Community where his family had lived and farmed since the 1840’s. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps at the onset of World War II and proudly served in the Pacific theater, including the battle of Guadalcanal. He retired from the Marine Corps Reserves with over 30 years of service. Following the war, he returned to Texas where, at the recommendation of his father, he went to work for the Soil Conservation Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He worked in Marshall, El Paso, Carthage, and finally in McKinney, where he retired in 1982 after 33 years of service. Stroud met his future wife, Margaret, when he was a patient in a Carthage hospital and where she was his nurse. They fell in love, and were married in Carthage on November 22, 1958. After moving to McKinney, they became members of Trinity Presbyterian Church and have been active in the community for well over fifty years. An outgoing, gregarious man by nature, Stroud treasured his many friends and neighbors here and will be missed. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, June 2, 2011 at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 5871 Virginia Parkway, McKinney, Texas 75071. The family will receive friends during a visitation on Wednesday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m., at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home, Allen, Texas. Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, June 3, 2011 at Nesbitt Cemetery, Nesbitt, Texas. Memorials may be made to Trinity Presbyterian Church or Toys for Tots.
