Roy Lee Walker

Roy Lee Walker, age 95, of McKinney, Texas, passed away February 17, 2011, in McKinney. Roy was born April 27, 1915, in Copeville, Texas, to Lacy Curtis and Maggie (Keith) Walker. He married Annie Mae Stanley on July 13, 1954, in Gunter, Texas. Roy grew up in the Copeville/Farmersville area of Collin County. He completed his undergraduate work at Wesley College in Greenville, Texas, where he graduated as the valedictorian of his class. He later received a bachelor and a master’s degree from Texas A & M University at Commerce, Texas. He was a teacher and principal in Murphy and Copeville. Roy enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps on June 18, 1942, in Dallas, Texas. He served during World War II earning the Good Conduct Medal, Bronze Star, EAME Service Ribbon with one bronze star, and a Distinguished Unit Badge. He was honorably discharged on October 22, 1945. Roy was a member of Community North Baptist Church in McKinney. After World War II, he was principal of J. L. Greer Elementary in McKinney for thirty-eight years. In 2000, Roy Lee Walker Elementary in McKinney was opened and named in his honor. Throughout his life he was also active in farming and ranching. He is survived by his daughters, Linda Rinn of McKinney, Texas and Suzanne Harper, also of McKinney, Texas; grandchildren, Katie, Alex, and Madelyn Harper; sister, Mary Ruth Mayne and husband, William Spence of Mesquite, Texas; sister-in-law, Dexie Walker Gilbert of Garland, Texas; and a host of other loving family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, brothers, John Charles Walker, Herman Shelby Walker, and Hubert Jones Walker, and nephew, Oliver Curtis Walker. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m., Wednesday, February 23, 2011, at Cottonwood Creek Baptist Church in Allen, Texas with Dr. Bruce Austin officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Ridgeview Memorial Park in Allen. The family will receive friends during a visitation beginning at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday evening at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home in Allen.
