Roscoe Edwin Simpson

Roscoe Edwin “Doc” Simpson passed away on April 4, 2005 at Homestead of McKinney Care Center. He had been a resident at Homestead since September 2001 where he was loved and cared for by many wonderful people. Born May 14, 1922 in Celina, Texas he was the son of Walter and Corda McLain Simpson. He was the last of seven children: Wilma, Twila, Pat, Lois, Christine, Sue, and Roscoe. “Rossie” graduated from McKinney High School in 1939. He worked as a farmer until he enlisted in the Army April 20, 1942. Roscoe was a paratrooper and a radio operator in Company E. of the 507th Parachute Infantry. He was deployed to Europe December 5, 1943 and his unit jumped over St. Mere Eglise around 2:00 AM on D-Day. He was taken as a prisoner-of-war that same week. He and two other soldiers escaped and made their way to France, where they were hidden by the French underground until September 1948. He completed his military service on September 14, 1945. Roscoe married Loydiene Putman in January 1948. She passed away in October 1944. Roscoe graduated with a Doctor in Veterinary Medicine from Texas A&M University in 1950. Doc’s first veterinary practice was at the Derryberry Animal Clinic at 806 W. Louisiana, McKinney, TX. Roscoe married Dorothy Hayes on July 18, 1951. He accepted a veterinary position with the State of Wisconsin and moved his family to Mondovi in the fall of 1951. Doc and Dottie spent the next 18 years in Wisconsin building at rural veterinary practice, raising two daughters, and enjoying their many friends. They were long time members of the Mondovi Country Club and loved to boat and fish on the Mississippi River. They moved back to Texas in 1969, where Doc worked for the next 15 years as a Veterinary Medical Officer in the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Amarillo, Hereford, Lubbock and San Angelo were the towns where they lived and worked from 1969 to 1995. Doc retired in 1984 so that he could devote more time to golf and his grandsons. Doc and Dottie moved back to the McKinney area in 1995. Dottie Simpson passed away on February 16, 2003. Roscoe is survived by his daughters, Leslie Weiss-Kent and husband, Steven on McKinney, TX and Robbie Krause of Galloway, NJ; grandson, Cory Weiss and wife, Crystal of Las Cruces, NM, Dr. Todd Weiss and wife, Jennifer of Springfield, IL, Douglas Krause and wife, Stephanie of Galloway, NJ; great grandsons, Cole and Carson Weiss of Las Cruces, NM; and sister, Sue Smith of Austin, TX. A military graveside service will be held 11:00 AM, Saturday, May 7, 2005 at the Pecan Grove Cemetery.
