Robert Carl "Bob" Porter

Robert Carl “Bob” Porter, age 86, of McKinney, Texas passed away November 1, 2010. He was born February 16, 1924 in McKinney, Texas to Robert Lee Porter and Zeffie (Bradley) Porter. Robert graduated from McKinney High School in 1941. He was a 1947 graduate of Rice University, where he was a 4 year letterman of the track team and was the southwest conference champion in the mile. Robert proudly served in the United States Navy from 1943-1946 and was a veteran of World War II. He was the captain of the Mine Sweeper C.O. YMS 112 in the Pacific, which was in Tokyo Bay during the surrender of Japan. On July 22, 1951 he married Mary Lanning in Boulder, Colorado. He worked for General Motors for 39 years in the Chevrolet Motor Division where he retired as a Regional Director. Robert was an avid tennis player, golfer, hand ball player, and jogger. He was a member of the McKinney Rotary Club and the First Presbyterian Church of McKinney He is survived by his wife, Mary Porter of McKinney, Texas; son, Michael Porter and wife, Jeannine of Prosper, Texas; daughters, Denise Billings and husband, Jack of Memphis, Tennessee, Alayne Porter of Bainbridge Island, Washington; grandchildren, Carolyn Gwatney, Robert Billings, Rachel Porter, Alex Porter, Ryan Porter, Sophie Griggs; great-grandchildren, Mary Caryl Gwatney and Jacqueline Gwatney; brother, Bill Porter of Irving, Texas and numerous other loving relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Zeffie Porter; sister, Anita Porter. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, November 5, 2010, at First Presbyterian Church, McKinney, Texas with Rev. John Blacklock officiating. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to The First Presbyterian Church of McKinney, 2000 W. White Avenue, McKinney, Texas 75069.
