Richard J. Turrentine

Richard J. Turrentine, age 87, formerly of Plano, Texas, passed away January 20, 2011 in Houston. He was born August 31, 1923 in Hopkins County, Texas to Richard Joshua and Stella Ruthie (Sparks) Turrentine, and was reared in Commerce, Texas. As a secondary school student he graduated from the East Texas State Teacher’s College Training School in Commerce, Texas. During World War II he entered the U.S. Army and served in the 101st Airborne Division in the Pacific Theater. After WWII, he attended East Texas State Teacher’s College. Richard married Donna Katherine Hurst on June 20, 1948, in Sherman, Texas. He first worked with his father in the grocery business in Commerce. During the Korean Conflict he entered the U.S. Marine Corps serving in technical roles at El Toro Base near Tustin, California. After his service in the Marine Corps, he and Donna settled in Sherman, where their two sons were born and Richard worked in the wholesale grocery business. In 1969 he and Donna relocated to Plano where they lived for many years. At this time he was employed by Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow and Ridgeview Memorial Park as cemetery manager until his retirement. Richard was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Plano, the 101st Airborne National Association, the Gardener’s of America Club, and Past President of the Plano Host Lion’s Club. He is survived by his wife, Donna Turrentine of Houston; sons Steve Turrentine and wife, Eileen of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Rick Turrentine and wife, Julie of Houston; and grandchildren, Sarah Turrentine, Kathryn Turrentine, James Turrentine, and John Turrentine. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Billy Frank Turrentine and C. Audie Turrentine; and sisters, Mozelle Kemendo and Faye Dugdale. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 26, 2011, at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home in Allen, Texas. Interment will follow at Ridgeview Memorial Park in Allen. The family will receive friends during a visitation beginning at 6:00 p.m., Tuesday evening at the funeral home.
