Richard "Dick" Scowcroft

Richard "Dick" Stewart Scowcroft of Plano, Texas passed away October 30, 2014 at the age of 87.  He was born on December 23, 1926 to Joseph and Catherine (Frazier) Scowcroft in Providence, Rhode Island.  Dick grew up in Edgewater, New Jersey where he graduated from Englewood High School in 1944.  Upon graduation, he entered the United States Army and proudly served his country during World War II.  Following completion of his service, he attended Montclair State University earning a degree in business administration in 1951.  It was during this time, that he met and fell in love with Joan Hook, a fellow classmate.  They married on December 22, 1951 and their amazing love story continued for nearly 63 years.

Upon graduation from Montclair, Dick began working for Mobil Oil Corporation where he had a highly successful career that spanned 39 years.  He began his career in the tax department as an accountant.  Concurrently, he attended New York University in the evenings earning a Master of Business Administration with honors in 1956.  During his career at Mobil Oil, he served in numerous managerial positions which culminated with him serving as Managing Director of the Foreign Tax Division.   Dick thoroughly enjoyed his career which included extensive foreign travel.  He was especially happy when Joan would accompany him on business travel to exotic destinations.

Dick was an amazing father to his five children.  He was instrumental in ensuring that his four daughters and one son attended and graduated from college.  With his guidance and support, several of his children went onto graduate school, medical school and law school.  Dick was the proud and beloved grandfather of twelve grandchildren ranging in age from 9 to 24.  He never stopped encouraging his grandkids to reach for their dreams, work hard and be the best they could be.

When he wasn't working or spending family time, Dick had several hobbies he enjoyed.  His favorite of all hobbies was golf and nothing made him happier than hitting the greens with his son and son-in-laws.  One of his fondest memories was a surprise 75th birthday trip with his son to historic Pebble Beach where they enjoyed multiple rounds of golf together.  When not golfing, he enjoyed his weekly poker group and often traveled to various casino resorts with friends and family.  Dick was always up for a game of cards.  He and Joan enjoyed teaching their grandkids to play a myriad of card games.

For nearly 40 years, Dick was an active member of the Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration in Dallas, Texas. 

Dick is survived by his wife, Joan Scowcroft; children, Ann O’Blenes and husband Scott, Jane Peccarelli and husband Brian, Mary Berger and husband Dohn all of Plano, Texas, James Scowcroft and wife Debbie of Leawood, Kansas and Elizabeth Berglund and husband James of Dallas, Texas; grandchildren, Katherine O’Blenes, Christopher O’Blenes, Nicholas Peccarelli, Alexander Peccarelli, Jordan Berger, Jacqueline Berger, Jamie Scowcroft, Drew Scowcroft, Matthew Scowcroft, Jessica Scowcroft, Rachel Frederick and Luke Berglund. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Catherine Scowcroft; twin brother, Robert Scowcroft; and sister, Mary Watson.

A funeral mass will be held 11:00 a.m., Friday, November 7, 2014 at Episcopal Church of The Transfiguration, 14115 Hillcrest Road, Dallas, Texas, 75254.  Interment will follow at Restland Memorial Park in Dallas, Texas.  The family will receive friends during a visitation on Thursday evening from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home in Allen, Texas.
