Richard Lee "Dick" Cathriner

Richard Lee “Dick” Cathriner, age 79, of Plano, Texas, passed away October 1, 2009, in Plano. Dick was born January 2, 1930, in Whittier, California, to William M. and Dorothy (Walter) Cathriner. He grew up in California and received a bachelor’s degree from Stanford University in Petroleum Engineering and a master’s degree in the same field from the University of Southern California. He was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. Dick entered active service in the United Stated Air Force in November 1952. On March 15, 1954, he graduated with the class of 54E from pilot training and was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, rated Military Aviator. His last assignment was with the 38th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron in Spangdahlem, AB, Germany; and he chose to leave active duty February 1957, as a 1st Lieutenant. Dick married Sally Schaefer on June 15, 1957, in Larchmont, New York, and returned to a career in petroleum engineering. He remained in the Reserves until 1967. Dick was employed with Atlantic Richfield Oil Company, which later became ARCO, for over thirty years. After retiring in 1985, he was involved in several businesses. Dick was a founder and member of the board of Norgasco, Inc. He owned Vanguard Engineering through which he consulted as a registered professional engineer (PE), and he was an enrolled agent (EA), preparing tax returns alongside his wife at the Plano Tax Service. Dick’s hobbies included sailing, aviation, snow skiing, cycling, and taking cruises with his wife. He is survived by his wife, Sally Cathriner of Plano, Texas; children, Richard J. Cathriner and wife, Janet of Plano, Texas, Robert A. Cathriner and wife, Lettie of Frisco, Texas, and Carla Birmingham and husband, David of Prosper, Texas; grandchildren, Richard T. Cathriner, Sara R. Cathriner, Adam R. Cathriner, Jacob L. Birmingham, Callie E. Birmingham, and Jared N. Birmingham; brother, William W. Cathriner and wife, Jean of Houston, Texas, and a host of other loving family and friends, whom he always remembered. He was preceded in death by his parents. The family will receive visitors at a gathering Friday, October 9, at 7 p.m. at Turrentine, Jackson, Morrow Funeral Home in Allen. A memorial service will be held Saturday, October 10, at 4 p.m. at Turrentine, Jackson, Morrow Funeral Home in Allen. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your favorite charity.
