Rev. Richard (Dick) Lee Russell

Rev. Richard (Dick) Lee Russell passed away on November 23, 2006 in Dallas, TX. Rev. Russell was born on January 15, 1929 to James Allen Russell and Ammie Ruth Carey Russell in Kansas City, MO. He was the Valedictorian of the class of 1947 of Texarkana High School. After high school he attended community college for a year in Texarkana before serving as an 1st Lieutenant in the Korean War. Following the war he attended Texas Christian University where he graduated with Bachelor of Arts in History in 1955. In 1962 he earned a Bachelor of Divinity from Brite Divinity School and was ordained as a minister in the Christian Church Disciples of Christ. Rev. Russell served churches as a student pastor, full-time pastor, and interim minister in Arlington, TX, Ranger, TX, Breckenridge, TX, Coffeyville, KS, Hurst, TX, Weslaco, TX, Salem, IN, Van Alstyne, TX, McKinney, TX, Wray, CO, Denison, TX, Lancaster, TX, Sherman, TX, Aubry, TX, and West Point, MS. He was also active in the local community of the various churches he served in an ecumenical capacity. In addition, Rev. Russell authored and published a book on his experiences as a pastor in 1998 entitled Portraits from the Pastorate and Other Places. Rev. Russell is survived by his wife of 52 years, Jane Russell of Lewisville, Texas, his brother James Russell of Bluffton, South Carolina, his sons David Russell and his wife Carm of Duvall, Washington and Mark Russell and his wife Vielka of Everett, Washington, his daughters Sarah Fish and her husband Robbie of San Antonio, Texas and Dr. Mary Hayes and her husband James of Keller, Texas and 7 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one grandchild. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am, Monday, November 27, 2006 at the First Christian Church in McKinney, Texas with Dr. Neill Grimes officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow at the DFW National Cemetery in Dallas, Texas. The family will receive friends Sunday, November 26, 2006 from 3:00 – 5:00 pm at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home. Donations in Rev. Russell’s memory may be made to your local church.
