Ralph Hughes

Ralph R. Hughes was born on May 9, 1937 in Bells,Texas to Gene Hughes and Opal Cates Hughes. Ralph married Barbara Nell Hasty on October 8, 1955 in Kaufman, Texas. He went to be with the Lord on Thursday, October 25, 2012, at Texas Health Presbyterian WNJ Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.

Ralph graduated from Whitewright High School in 1955, where he was an outstanding athlete. He graduated from Texas A & M University Commerce with a Bachelor’s Degree in Math and Industrial Technology in 1959, and a Masters Degree in Industrial Technology in 1977. Following graduation from Texas A & M Commerce, Ralph joined the National Guard, and in 1961, during the Berlin Crisis, he was called to active duty and served his country as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army. He also earned an Associate Degree in Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning from Grayson County College in 1987. He taught Algebra, Chemistry, Physics, Auto-Cad and HVAC at Leonard, Bells, and Whitewright. He taught HVAC at Sherman High School and Grayson County College. While at Whitewright High School, he sponsored the outstanding Engineering Team (NT Best Robotics). Under his leadership the Tigers won the State Robotics Championship 5 times.

Ralph was honored as an Alumni Ambassador by the Industrial Engineering and Technology Department at Texas A & M University Commerce in 2003. He retired in 2002 after teaching for 28 years. Ralph was a member of the Whitewright Masonic Lodge AM & FM #167, a past president of the Rotary Club, a former member of the Whitewright Lions Club, a member of the Whitewright Chamber of Commerce, and a proud supporter of the Whitewright Tigers. He was a long time member of First Baptist Church of Whitewright.

Ralph loved to fish, play golf, tackle robotic challenges, and spend time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He was blessed with the ability to work with his hands and could build or fix just about anything.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Barbara, son, Ed Hughes and wife, Connie, daughter, Becca Hughes Ferrill, and sister, Carol Hughes Sandefur, and several cousins. He was blessed with three grandchildren, Chris Hughes, Holly Hughes, and Quincy Ferrill. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Nova Hughes.

Services were held at 12:00 p.m., Saturday, October 27, 2012 at the First Baptist Church in Whitewright, preceded by visitation at 11:00 a.m. Officiating the services were Rev. Rodney Stanford and Rev. Leon Veazey. Burial was at Oak Hill Cemetery in Whitewright. Pallbearers were Mike Herber, Mark Kline, Barry Bond, Bob Purdom, Bill Coley, Earl Chesser, Kelly Selman, Rodney Nicely, Connie Andrew, Bobby Clark, and Gary McDonald.

Memorials in Ralph’s memory may be made to the First Baptist Church of Whitewright Prison Ministry.
