IN LOVING MEMORY

Peggy Ann Burchfield Smith

Aug 04 1934 - Nov 22 2012

Peggy Ann Smith was born August 4, 1934 in Ely, Texas  to Byrd and Melvia Irene Burchfield. She took her journey to heaven on November 22, 2012 at the Homestead Nursing Facility, Sherman Texas at the age of 78.

Peggy married the love of her life, Sonny B. Smith, on November 30, 1956 in Bonham, Texas. Their 35 years of marriage was full of love, family and friends, completely committed to each other and their shared values.

Peggy was a woman of virtue and character and her legacy will forever be an example to others.  At the core of her being, she was a Christian and knew Jesus Christ to be the savior of the world.  Peggy lived her entire life with grace, a deep abiding faith, and compassion for others. Peggy volunteered frequently to the Meals on Wheels program bringing many others joy through her servant heart. Peggy was selfless, loved unconditionally and lived life honorably.  Her smiles, laughter and hugs will forever be missed.  Her sense of hospitality came from her deepest heart.  Peggy had a relentless resolve to accomplish any task before her.  Although Peggy has finished her time on earth, her eternal legacy lives on through those that knew her.

Proverbs 31:28-30 “Her children rise up, and call her blessed, her husband also, and he praiseth her. Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all. Favour is deceitful and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised.”

Peggy’s faith and bright spirit remained constant during her time of illness this past year, even when she was weak, healing from surgery or  treatments and in the nursing facility in her last days.  Her radiant smile lit up the room when people visited and the excellent staff that helped care for her.

The family would like to thank Peggy's sister Dot Huckaby for the countless hours that she spent taking her to treatments, appointments and staying with her daily the 8 months that Peggy was in the Homestead Nursing Home.  Peggy called her a jewel, and that's exactly what she was to her loving sister.  We also would like to thank the staff of the Homestead Nursing Facility.  They are angels on earth providing outstanding care going above and beyond their duties; compassion, care with a personal touch, attentiveness and their smiles and laughter!  Also a special thanks to the Heart to Heart hospice for their excellent care, support and love shown to our loved one!  Their staff was very knowledgeable, providing education to the family and around the clock care in her last days.

Peggy was survived by her two sons, Rev. Phillip Smith and wife Janet of Denison; their children, Rev. Chad E. Smith and wife Tara and daughters Addison and Ainsley; Ashley Owens and husband Nick; Amber Sharp and husband Ryan;  James Smith of Whitewright and wife Shawn and sons Riley Smith and Josh Jenkins.

She was also survived by two brothers and two sisters, JW Burchfield and wife Joyce of Brenham; Bob Burchfield and wife Betty of Lewisville; Doris Sheridan and husband Lewis of Paris; Dot Huckaby and husband Jim of Luella.

Peggy was preceded in death by her loving husband, Sonny Smith on April 2, 1991; her parents, Byrd and Melvia Burchfield, and her brother Sgt. Jimmy Burchfield.

Funeral services will be held at 2p.m. Monday, November 26, at the Church of Christ, Whitewright with Mr. Frazier Conley and Mr. Dan Boggs officiating.  Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery, Whitewright. Pallbearers will be nephews; Brian Christopher, Gerald Sheridan, Kyle Sheridan, Keith Sheridan, Bo Sheridan, Bruce Burchfield, Brad Burchfield, and grandson Riley Smith.

The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon from 2-4 p.m. at Turrentine Jackson Morrow Funeral Home, Whitewright.
