Orval Eugene "Cotton" Spurgin

Orval Eugene “Cotton” Spurgin, age 94, of McKinney, Texas, passed away June 4, 2013, in McKinney. Cotton was born May 18, 1919, in Winningkoff, Texas, to Ollie and Elizabeth Spurgin and lived his entire life in Collin County. He graduated from Boyd High School in McKinney and Drones Business College in Dallas. He served in the U. S. Army, Company I, 144th Infantry for four years, 10 months and seven days. He was a farmer, postman, office manager for the McKinney Cotton Compress, an agricultural loan officer with Central National Bank, and realtor, owning his own business, O. E. Spurgin Realtors. He was a faithful member of First United Methodist Church in McKinney and the Fellowship Class. He was a member of the Lions Club since 1968, serving as secretary/treasurer for many years. Cotton was also the first mayor of the city of Lucas.

He is survived by his wife, Marion West Spurgin of McKinney, Texas; daughters, Janet Camarillo and husband, Rudy of Fort Worth and Mary Helen Pratt and husband, Steve of Austin, Texas; son, Paul West and wife, Trudy of Van Alstyne, Texas; grandchildren, Dr. Matthew Camarillo of Houston, Julie Camarillo of Dallas, Bethany McCarter and husband, Adam, and Nathan, Savannah, and Jessamyn West, all of Van Alstyne; sister, Marie Phelps; brothers, Truman, Billy, and Dale Spurgin; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Estelle, parents, and siblings, Velda Copus, Noble, O. W. (Buck), E. R. (Sandy), and Jack Spurgin.

Cotton loved the land and spent most of his life connected to it as a farmer, cattleman, and realtor.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, June 6, 2013, at First United Methodist Church in McKinney, Texas. A reception will be held in the parlor prior to the service. Interment will follow at Ridgeview Memorial Park in Allen, Texas. The family will receive friends during a visitation from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m., Wednesday evening at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home in Allen.
