IN LOVING MEMORY

Obie Rockwell

Jun 02 1917 - Aug 09 2013

On June 2, 1917 Will Montgomery and Lola Hatten, a Native American, welcomed Obie Rockwell into this world. Like most parents, they both held high hopes for their son, as he made his journey through life. Obie's childhood was spent in the community of Lake O the Pines in deep East Texas. He began working at an early age to help his family make ends meet. This was the beginning of the development of a strong work ethic that carried him throughout his life. In his early 20's, in 1942, Obie served his country as a soldier in the ARMY. He received his basic training at Fort Polk, Louisiana, before serving tours in Guam, the Philippines, and Germany. Obie was recognized as a sharpshooter. He received the American Theater Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with 1 Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, Victory Ribbon, I Service Stripe, and 3 Overseas Stripe. In 1943, during his tour in the ARMY, Obie’s daughter Honorine Pair was born. Following his discharge from the ARMY, in 1946 and after having seen the world, Obie returned to his hometown community to marry and continue growing his family. He married Monnie Mae Simmons on December 1, 1950 in McKinney, Texas, and became a father to her daughter, Emma Jean Montgomery. There were three children born to that union: Monnie Louise; Obie Lewis and Robert Earl. Seeking work opportunities, Obie alternated residences between McKinney and Lake O the Pines. The family eventually settled permanently in the Collin County, Texas area. Obie held several jobs throughout the years, where he gained the admiration and respect of his co-workers and employers. Following the death of Monnie Mae in 1975, Obie moved to Dallas and met and married Freddie Mae Sheffield in 1977. He enjoyed many years of loving companionship with Freddie until her death in 1999. Obie lived out his remaining days in Dallas and Farmer's Branch,Texas. His greatest pride and joy was his family. In addition to being preceded in death by his parents, awaiting him in Heaven were two brothers: Sam Rockwell & Anderson Rockwell; and three sisters: Mary Dee McKinney, Vernella Graham and Winney Fisher. He was also preceded in death by his son Obie Lewis Rockwell and daughter, Monnie Pearson. He leaves to mourn his passing: son, Robert (Melody) Rockwell, daughters Honorine(Thomas)Franklin and Emma Montgomery Bell. Missing their "Grand Dad" are: Stephen(Natalia)Morrow, Krystal Oviatt(Chas Lobmeyer); Mary(Charles)Anderson,Thomas Jr.(Kichelle)Franklin,Theresa Bell, Victoria Cheatham, and Nicole Lowe ; several great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren: and a host of family and friends .
