Melvin Hartwell Smith of Bonham, Texas was born March 16, 1941 in Hunt County to William Hartwell Smith and Vera White Smith. He passed away June 9, 2013 at Medical City in Dallas. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Garland Smith and Derrell Smith. He married Charlotte McDonald on April 20, 1963. He is survived by his wife, son, Brent Smith of Fairview, Texas, son and daughter-in-law, Jason and Paige Smith of Bonham, Texas, grandchildren, Greer and Eli Smith, brother and sister-in-law, Herman and Jean Smith of Maud, Texas and sister and brother-in-law, Donna and Ted Tingle of Celeste, Texas and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his “other brother”, Jerry Swindell of Celeste, Texas. He was a member of the Baptist faith.

He retired as a buyer from Procter and Gamble in Dallas in 1992 and as manager of the Procter and Gamble Employee Credit Union in 1997.

Melvin loved life and found joy in the simple things in life. He was an avid reader and took pleasure in his spare time reading the many books in his library. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He will live forever in the hearts of those who loved him.

There will be a family visitation at the Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home in Leonard June 14, 2013 from 6 until 8 p.m.
