Melvin Thomas Kepple

Melvin Thomas Kepple, former Manhattan Kansas resident, passed away September 28, 2011 at the age of 86 in Plano, Texas. He was born September 13, 1925 to Fabian and Verna (Fuller) Kepple in Topeka, Kansas. After graduating from Hayden Catholic High School in 1943, he entered the United States Army to serve in World War II. Melvin was in the service for two and a half years, serving one year in the Philippines. Upon his return to the states, he entered Washburn University where he was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He graduated in 1950 with a Bachelor Degree in mathematics. On November 25, 1948, Melvin married Emogene “Sandy” Saindon after meeting at Washburn University. His career began at the Morrill’s Packing Company. In 1951, he became the first director of the Computing Center Department of Administration for the State of Kansas where he wrote the first payroll check on the computer for the state. In 1967, Melvin and Sandy moved to Manhattan, Kansas where Melvin was the Director of Data Processing. When Data Processing and the Computer Center were combined, Melvin became the Associate Director of the Computing Center. He worked for the State of Kansas for 38 years before retiring. He was a member of St. Thomas Moore Catholic Church in Manhattan, Kansas where he served as a Hospitality Minister. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Elks, and Kiwanis. He enjoyed boating and water skiing at Tuttle Creek. Melvin and Sandy have four children; Steve Kepple and wife Nancy of Flower Mound, Texas, Jane Lilliston and husband Andy of McKinney, Texas , Theresa Silveira of Santa Cruz, California and Annette Baker and husband Kris of Plano, Texas; grandchildren, Sara Townsley, Emily Lawless, Elizabeth Fortier, Zachary Kepple, Melanie Lilliston, Drew, Lilliston, Jaclyn Baker, Will Baker, Natalie Baker and Owen Silveira and great-grandchildren, Jacob, Ella, Violet and Daphne; sister, Virginia Suttle of Richardson, Texas and other loving relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fabian and Verna Kepple. A Funeral Mass will be held 10:00 a.m., Monday, October 3, 2011 at Saint Gabriel Archangel Catholic Church, 110 St. Gabriel Way in McKinney, Texas. The family will receive friends during a Rosary Service on Sunday evening beginning at 7:00 p.m. at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Chapel.
