Mazel Melburn Merrill, Sr.

Mazel passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 27, 2010 in Dallas. He was born September 7, 1920, in Dallas, TX to Mazel and Nellyne (Hill) Merrill. He attended high school in Long Island, NY. Mazel married Marjorie Allyn on June 25, 1949, in West Hartford, CT. He was a long-time resident of Dallas and recently of Ft. Worth. His family and friends will forever remember his kindness and generosity, sense of humor, unselfish spirit and great love for family. Mazel enjoyed spending time with his wife, Margie, sons Mazel Jr. and Bob, daughter-in law, Lindsey, grandson, Austin and his brother, Jack’s family. He was always interested in knowing and helping others. Mazel graduated from Cornell University in 1942 with a bachelor degree in mechanical engineering. He served in World War II in the 740th Tank Battalion of the U.S. Army. Mazel enjoyed participating in reunions with his battalion many years later. His father was an early aviation pioneer leading Mazel to begin his career with Fairchild Aircraft Engines. He followed that experience with many years as an industrial engineer with LTV Corporation and eventually retired as an engineering manager with Lone Star Gas. Mazel was active with the Fifth Church of Christ Scientist and served as usher, Sunday school teacher and First Reader. He was an avid supporter of the Gladney Center for Adoption where he became known affectionately as “Pops”. His family ski pilgrimages to Colorado every Christmas were a special family tradition. He is survived by his daughter-in-law, Lindsey L. Merrill; grandson, Austin Allyn Merrill; nephews, John Henry Depew, Jr., Richard Maury Depew, David Russell Depew and Robert Lawrence Depew; niece, Anne Fontaine Sheaffer; and many other loving family and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margie; sons, Mazel, Jr. and Bob; and a brother, Jack. A private family graveside service will be held at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Dallas, TX on Thursday, April 1, 2010.
