Max H. Murphy

Max H. Murphy, age 89, of Allen, Texas, died June 29, 2007, in McKinney. He was born on December 15, 1917, in Vigo County, IN. He was the son of Dr. Walter and Naomi Payne. Dr Payne died in 1918 treating flu patients during the epidemic. Naomi brought Max to Houston, TX in a Model T Ford at the age of 3. His mother then married John Murphy in Houston. Max graduated from St. Thomas High School in Houston. He enlisted in the Air Corps during WW II and served as bombardier and instructor. After the war, he moved to Dallas and worked his entire career in the textile industry in sales and design. In 1986 he retired and moved to Allen, TX. During his retirement, he enjoyed playing golf and serving as a course marshal at many clubs in the Plano/Allen area. He is survived by his loving wife, Alwilda; and their children, Mike Murphy (Leslie) of Broken Arrow, OK, David Strawn (Diane), of Princeton, TX, Beverly Cruzan of Allen, TX, and Gary Strawn (Jane) of Moline, IL; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Dot Murphy of Katy, TX; and her children whom he loved very much and thought of as his own. Max was preceded in death by his brother, Jack Murphy of Fairfield, TX and his sisters, Goethe Wilhoit and Harlena Pfifer, of Indiana. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, July 3, 2007, at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Chapel with his friend, Nelson McCord officiating.
